Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the chart showing fast food consumption frequencies in the USA between 2003 and 2013, mentioning categories such as 'once or twice a month' and 'once a week'. However, the response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 113 words. This results in a significant under-development of the task. Furthermore, there are severe factual inaccuracies and misreadings of the data, such as claiming the data extends to 2016, and some descriptions of trends are vague or incorrect. Due to the under-length penalty and incomplete coverage of key data trends, the task achievement is limited.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The response shows very basic paragraphing and organisation, starting with an introduction followed by a single block of text representing the body. Logical progression is severely hindered by erratic punctuation, capitalization errors (e.g., 'overall', 'in'), and missing conjunctions. Cohesive devices are either absent or misused, resulting in run-on sentences and disconnected clauses, such as 'A few a year the percentage show constant on 2006 to 2013 similary the people who never eat fast on resturant overview constant'. Referencing is unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of information across the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
Vocabulary usage is severely restricted and contains frequent spelling and word-form errors that impede communication. Examples include 'consumssion' instead of consumption, 'consummer' instead of consumer, and 'aqupied' instead of occupied. The student attempts to use statistical vocabulary such as 'percentage', 'constantly increasing', and 'rapidly decrease', but inaccurate word choice and poor collocation are widespread throughout the response. The range of vocabulary is basic and repetitive, failing to demonstrate the flexibility required for higher band scores.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, relying heavily on simple structures that are frequently marred by basic errors. There are numerous issues with subject-verb agreement, tense usage, and missing prepositions, such as 'the percentage of ate food' and 'never eat fast on resturant'. Punctuation is largely neglected, with missing periods and commas creating fused sentences and making the text difficult to parse. Complex sentence attempts are faulty and lack control over grammatical rules.
