Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the chart, correctly identifying some overall trends and specific data points, such as the peak for once-a-week fast food consumption and the figure of 15% for a few times a year. However, there are significant misinterpretations and inaccurate data reporting throughout the response. For instance, the text claims the chart is a line chart rather than a bar chart, and mentions the year 20003 instead of 2003. Furthermore, some trends described do not match the visual data accurately, such as the claim about once-a-month consumption in 2013 and the misreading of several-times-a-week figures. The overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the most salient features. These issues place the response at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structure, but the logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing references and awkward transitions. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, resulting in mechanical and repetitive linking (e.g., 'Following this', 'In contrast', 'Subsequently'). Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult to follow which demographic or category is being discussed. For example, expressions like 'the canidates ate resturant food in a few times a year' create significant cohesion and clarity issues. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak. These characteristics align with a Band 5.0 score for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited and repetitive, with numerous spelling and word-choice errors that impede communication. Misspelled words such as 'resturants', 'canidates', and 'resturant' appear multiple times. Grammatical word-form errors are also frequent, such as using 'person how ate' instead of 'people who ate', and confusing nouns with verbs ('showed a upward trend', 'follow downward trend'). While the student attempts some topic-related vocabulary, the constant lexical inaccuracies and non-standard collocations restrict the score to Band 4.5, which rounds to 5.0 based on standard half-band reporting, though strictly hovering around Band 4 to 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on basic, repetitive sentence patterns that are frequently faulty. There are persistent errors in subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people how ate once a week was showed', 'everyday eater have'), tense consistency, and relative clauses ('person how took'). Complex sentence attempts are almost uniformly marred by severe structural and grammatical errors. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also handled poorly in places. These frequent and systematic errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 4.5 to 5.0 descriptor range.
