Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by summarizing the main features of the chart regarding fast food consumption in the USA from 2003 to 2013. However, there are several inaccuracies in the data reporting. For instance, the student states that the percentage of everyday eaters in 2003 was '4', but misses some precise reporting, and sentences trail off incompletely such as 'while eating everday from outside was at least'. While an overview is attempted, it is incomplete and cut off. Key trends are mentioned, such as the peak in once-a-week and once-a-month categories, but the response suffers from under-developed descriptions and data inaccuracies. This places the response firmly at Band 5.0 for addressing the task only partially with limited development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by broken sentences, abrupt transitions, and poor phrasing (e.g., 'wi. while eating everday from outside was at least'). Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately, such as 'To begin with', 'Morever', and 'Secondly'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is weak and disjointed. Referencing and substitution are occasionally unclear, making the progression difficult to follow at times. This reflects the characteristics of Band 5.0, where there is some organization but a lack of clear overall progression and inadequate use of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary suitable for the task. There are multiple spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'precentile' instead of percentage, 'resturents' instead of restaurants, 'everday' instead of everyday, 'sifnificant' instead of significant, 'experinced' instead of experienced, 'diclined' instead of declined, and 'soared' used inappropriately where 'fluctuated' or 'increased' might fit better. These errors are noticeable and occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, though it is minimally adequate to convey the general topic. This matches the Band 5 descriptor for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but attempts at complexity are frequently faulty or incomplete (e.g., 'While in 2006 it numbers rose to 20% following 2013 it again reduced to 16%'). Grammatical errors and punctuation mistakes are very frequent throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('it numbers rose', 'figures... was'), missing prepositions, and incomplete clauses ('with increasing it's figures in 2006 which was about 33%'). These errors cause considerable strain for the reader and impede fluent reading. This performance aligns with Band 4.0 to 5.0, comfortably fitting Band 5.0 due to a limited range of structures and frequent errors.
