Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting information from the chart regarding fast-food consumption frequencies in the USA between 2003 and 2013. However, the task is only partially addressed due to significant omissions and inadequately developed ideas. While some main features are mentioned, such as the peak at once a week and the daily consumption figures, the selection is incomplete and lacks a fully realised overview. The second paragraph attempts an overview ('It is crystal clear that the highest proportion...'), but it is grammatically incomplete and lacks clarity regarding comparative trends over time. Furthermore, data is reported mechanically without adequate comparison or synthesis. To improve, the writer needs to provide a clearer, error-free overview and ensure all key trends across the categories and years are properly highlighted and supported with accurate data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation present in the text, with an introduction, a rudimentary overview attempt, and body sentences reporting specific data points. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is disrupted by fragmented sentences and poor paragraphing. Paragraph breaks are misused, separating related data points awkwardly. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'At a fleeting glance', 'Moving ahead', and 'Moving furthur', which appear forced and do not establish natural transitions between ideas. Referencing and progression between sentences are frequently disjointed, making the overall structure difficult to follow. To move to a higher level, the writer should ensure each paragraph has a clear thematic focus, logical progression of ideas, and smoother, more natural cohesive ties.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student makes several noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation that cause some difficulty for the reader. For example, 'imformation' is misspelled, 'resturents' contains a spelling error, and awkward phrasing such as 'lowest people was visited' and 'liked to ate' demonstrates weak control over collocation and word forms. Although some task-related vocabulary is attempted, such as 'proportion', 'percentage', and 'frequently', inaccuracies persist throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, eliminate basic spelling mistakes, and pay closer attention to word forms and natural collocations when describing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammar is characterised by a very limited range of sentence structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. The text contains numerous grammatical faults, including missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect verb forms following infinitives (e.g., 'liked to ate', 'to ate food', 'went to restaurant to ate'), and faulty subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the lowest people was visited'). Punctuation and article usage are also problematic, evidenced by missing commas, run-on structures, and awkward spacing. Attempts at complex sentences are generally faulty, leading to broken clauses and unclear meanings. To improve, the writer needs to focus on fundamental sentence construction, ensuring correct verb tense usage, accurate infinitive structures, and proper agreement between subjects and verbs.
