Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response makes an attempt to present an overview of the provided chart, but it only partially addresses the requirements of the task. While some main features are mentioned, such as the peak at once a week in 2003 and 2006, the overall selection of data is incomplete and heavily confused. Many reported figures and trends are inaccurate or poorly expressed, such as claiming that consumer rates for eating every day were 'higher then 2006-2013 by 2%' when the chart shows 4% in 2003 and 3% in both 2006 and 2013. The overview provided in the second paragraph is vague and difficult to follow, failing to clearly outline the overarching trends across the decade. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to accurately select and report the most prominent data points without misinterpreting the percentages and categories shown in the visual prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response is organized into paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Although the writer attempts to group information chronologically into separate paragraphs, the logical flow breaks down due to confusing sentence structures and abrupt shifts between different years and categories. Cohesive devices are used very mechanically and inappropriately, such as using 'Although' and 'however' without contrasting logical propositions effectively. Furthermore, referencing and paragraph transitions are weak, which leaves the progression of information disjointed and hard for the reader to follow. To improve, the writer must ensure that sentences connect smoothly and that the overarching structure clearly guides the reader through the main trends and comparisons in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and frequently inaccurate, which restricts the quality of the response. The writer relies heavily on basic terms and misuses several less common or task-specific words, such as 'portion' instead of 'proportion', 'street foods and junk items', and 'consumed the junk item'. There are also noticeable word-form and collocation errors, including 'consumer's rate' and 'best timing'. Additionally, spelling errors such as 'cosumed' and 'yeas' appear in the text. While the overall meaning can sometimes be deciphered, these frequent lexical inaccuracies cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their vocabulary range, use precise terminology related to statistical data, and ensure correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple and flawed attempts at complex sentence structures. The response contains frequent grammatical errors throughout, including missing or incorrect articles, faulty verb tenses, and awkward prepositional phrases, such as 'liked ate in a once a week' and 'timeline increase to about more then 30%'. Punctuation is also problematic, leading to run-on thoughts and fragmented sentences. These frequent errors cause significant difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise meaning of the sentences. To improve, the writer should focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, accurately applying verb tenses for describing data, and minimizing grammatical errors in simple and complex sentences alike.
