Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response makes an attempt to summarise the bar chart regarding the frequency of eating fast food in the USA between 2003 and 2013, meeting the minimum word length. However, the task is addressed only partially. Key features and comparisons are presented in a very limited and sometimes unclear manner. For instance, the student states that in 2003, 2006, and 2013 people did not eat much fast food daily, which is partially supported by the low percentages for 'every day', but the overall reporting lacks a clear overview and accurate presentation of the main trends. Several data points are vaguely described or misreported, such as mentioning that 'more than 30 percent people would love to eat junk food one or more than one times in a month' for 2013, without clearly structuring the comparisons across the three years. To move to a higher band, the response must provide a clearer overview of the main trends and select and report key data accurately with meaningful comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The information and ideas are not arranged coherently throughout the response. The text lacks proper paragraphing, presented instead as a single block of text which makes the progression difficult to follow. While the student attempts to use some basic cohesive devices and transition words such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore', their usage is often mechanical and fails to establish clear logical relationships between sentences. Referencing is also weak, with ambiguous pronouns like 'they' appearing without clear antecedents. To improve coherence and cohesion, the response needs to be organised into logical paragraphs, starting with an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs grouping related data, with smoother and more accurate transitions connecting the ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, employing words such as 'people', 'eat', 'fast food', and 'junk food' frequently throughout the text. There are numerous word choice, word form, and spelling errors that strain the reader and restrict communication, such as 'daigram' instead of diagram, 'diffenert' instead of different, 'rutien' instead of routine, 'weak' instead of week, 'resurant' instead of restaurant, and 'becouse' instead of because. The range of vocabulary is limited to simple terms and basic descriptions, and attempts at less common phrasing lead to unnatural collocations. To achieve a higher band, the student should expand their lexical range to include more precise vocabulary for describing statistical data and trends, and eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple sentence structures and faulty attempts at more complex sentences. Errors are frequent and often distort meaning, such as 'this daigram analyze that usa people eat fast food in different era and have diffenert percentages' and 'in 2006 less majority like junk food in more than two in a month.' There are persistent errors in verb forms, tenses, prepositions, articles, and sentence boundaries. For example, 'people not eat much daily rutien fast food' lacks proper auxiliary verbs, and punctuation is largely neglected or misused. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence construction, ensure correct verb tenses and subject-verb agreement, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors that impede comprehension.
