Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally, as the information provided is often inaccurate or poorly selected. The writer misinterprets the visual data in several places, such as claiming the chart is a line graph or misreading specific percentages like the 15 percent figure for those who never or rarely ate fast food. There is no clear or accurate overview presented at the end of the text, and the key trends across the decade are largely obscured by confusion over what the figures represent. To improve, the writer must ensure that data points are accurately transcribed and reported, and a clear overview highlighting the main overall trends should be included.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. Although the student attempts to use transition markers such as "First of all", "In addition to", and "Moreover", the overall progression is difficult to follow because sentences are often disjointed and paragraphs lack a logical flow. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it hard to determine which years or data categories the writer is referring to. To achieve a higher band, the response needs a clearer logical structure, better paragraphing where each paragraph focuses on a distinct feature, and more accurate use of cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of data.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that occasionally strain communication. Phrases such as "ate some junk food", "moved to restaurants", and "enjoed food twice" demonstrate a limited control of language suitable for academic writing. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as "restaurents", "exicted", and "noth". To improve lexical resource, the student should expand their range of vocabulary related to data trends and statistics, and practice standard collocations for describing frequency and percentages rather than relying on informal or inaccurate terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
Grammatical control is weak, featuring a very limited range of structures and frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. The text contains numerous issues with prepositions, articles, tense consistency, and clause structures, such as "there were only almost 4 percent people" and "in the year of 2003 the citizens... did not want". Attempts at complex sentences often result in faulty grammar and awkward phrasing, as seen in the opening sentence. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to practice basic sentence formation, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and reduce the frequency of grammatical errors by writing simpler, more accurate sentences.
