Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the chart’s topic and attempts to report some comparisons, including that weekly eating was highest in 2006 and that monthly eating rose to about 33% in 2013. However, the overview is unclear and does not accurately summarise the main pattern across all three years. Several details are incomplete or confusing: the statement that the percentage was “below the 5 percentage” does not specify which category or year, and the final comparison does not clearly identify the years being compared. Important features, such as the shift from weekly eating being most common in 2003 and 2006 to monthly eating in 2013, are not clearly explained. The response is also 49 words below the required minimum, leaving too little space to cover the chart adequately. Develop a clear overview and report the main categories and changes precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening sentence is followed by an overview and a paragraph beginning “To Begin with.” This gives the reader some indication of the intended structure. However, the progression between ideas is difficult to follow because comparisons are compressed into long, unclear sentences. For example, “In 2003 they perctentage … but times ago the ratio will be increased” does not make the relationship between the years and categories clear. The final sentence also combines several categories without clearly separating the comparisons. Use one paragraph for a concise overview and another for selected details, then present each comparison in a complete sentence with clear links such as “whereas” or “by contrast.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “frequency,” “percentage,” “increased,” and “ratio,” so the topic is recognisable. However, word choice and spelling are often inaccurate, and some expressions are not natural for describing chart data. Examples include “resturants,” “seprate,” “perctentage,” and “moduls”; “their separate usage percentage” and “higher ratio” are also unclear or awkward. Repeating “ratio” and “percentage” does not provide enough precise vocabulary to distinguish the eating-frequency categories. Use the chart’s labels directly, such as “once a week” and “once or twice a month,” and practise accurate forms such as “proportion” and “accounted for.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts more than isolated simple statements, but sentence structures are not controlled consistently, and errors often make relationships between ideas unclear. For instance, “In 2003 they perctentage … but times ago the ratio will be increased” has an unclear subject and an unsuitable verb construction; “in 2006 are ration inclined 20 percentage” is also incomplete as a sentence. The final sentence joins several comparisons without clear grammatical links. Tense use should remain in the past when describing the years shown, and each sentence needs a clear subject and verb. Practise accurate comparative patterns, for example, “The proportion eating weekly fell from 33% in 2006 to 28% in 2013.”
