Student answer (Band 6.5)

Transportation plays an important role in the development of a country. It also play an important role in the daily life of the citizens as they need it for many purpose such as transporting their goods from one place to another or reaching anywhere.

People who think that it is necessary to spend a large amount of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast train between cities will have their own reasons of saying that. Probably they are not satisfy by the current transportation system between the cities as they think it is very slow sometime to reach another city which is far from their city.

Other people who believe that money should be spent on existing public transports improvement will have their own reasons. One reason may be that the construction of new railways from the start will take a lot of time and money and the way i see it is a valid point. Because building a transportation system from start requires a lot of time, effort and a big budget which in my opinion is not a good decision taken by any Country's officials.

Rather than developing a new infrastructure for fast trains money should be spent on improving the existing transportation system in term of its quality and the way people want it to be.

For example in my country people protest that they are not happy with the current transportation system. As a result of that protest the Government officials take new step and improve the quality of transportation system rather that building a new transportation system from the begining.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that high-speed rail is expensive and time-consuming, the arguments lack depth and specific supporting evidence. The example provided regarding your country is quite generic and does not fully illustrate the complexities of the debate. To achieve a higher band, you should expand on the benefits of high-speed rail (e.g., economic growth, reduced travel time) and provide more detailed reasoning for your preference for improving existing infrastructure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'People who think that' and 'Other people who believe that' are used to introduce paragraphs, which makes the flow feel a bit simplistic. Additionally, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is clear throughout the text would improve the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'important role', 'good decision', and 'a lot of time'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'not satisfy' instead of 'not satisfied' and 'from the begining' (spelling error). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to urban planning and transportation, such as 'infrastructure development', 'fiscal allocation', or 'commuter efficiency'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('It also play an important role'), incorrect verb forms ('not satisfy'), and punctuation/capitalization inconsistencies ('Country's officials'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are persistent throughout the text. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
