Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people opine that we should focus on developing and building new public transport and others believe to make current ones better, following write discuss both views and put forward my belief in matter.

People often believe in modern development and demands improvement in public transport. First and foremost reason that anyone will put forward is population in mega cities. Mega cities development creates new opportunities in job market, which demands high travel between cities. Inter city can be faster and convenient if can be equipped by new technology. For instance, In India, government is building new railway line for bullet train connecting multiple mega cities within counties like Delhi, Kanpur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Similar like India we are seeing such developments in developing countries like Chine and southern African countries.

To support opposite view, people put arguments like, cost effectiveness and recycle culture to preserve nature. One often believes new development comes at greater cost and creates huge impact on tax payers for upcoming years. Another view comes from environmentalist and scientist about preservation of ecosystem, new rail tracks and transportation put a huge impact on surrounding nature and ecosystem, to cover the better transportation, they often encourage renovating current public transportation like bus system between inter-cities and increasing frequencies in public transportation.

I strongly lean towards first argument as the global population is increasing and world is becoming global village, it would be beneficial to implement new technology in transportation as it would reduce travel time significantly.

Overall, In lieu of investing on making current transportation improvement, it is beneficial to construct new one as it creates new job opportunities and takes society in greater future of new developments.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and clearly states a personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the points regarding population growth and environmental concerns are relevant, they lack depth and specific analysis. The essay follows the prompt's requirements, but the arguments could be more thoroughly extended to reach a higher band. The conclusion is brief and reiterates the position, but it does not fully synthesize the points discussed. The response is balanced, but the supporting evidence, such as the mention of India and China, is presented in a slightly disjointed manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First and foremost', 'To support opposite view', and 'Overall', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel mechanical, and the flow between sentences is occasionally interrupted by awkward phrasing. For example, the opening sentence is quite fragmented and lacks smooth integration. Referencing is generally clear, but the use of cohesive devices could be more varied and sophisticated to improve the overall flow and logical progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. There are some repetitive word choices, such as 'transportation' and 'development'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'ecosystem', 'mega cities', and 'cost effectiveness', the collocation is sometimes unnatural, such as 'put a huge impact on surrounding nature'. There are also minor errors in word formation and usage, such as 'following write discuss' instead of 'the following essay discusses'. Expanding the range of synonyms and improving collocations would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Issues include missing articles (e.g., 'in mega cities'), incorrect verb forms (e.g., 'demands improvement' instead of 'demand improvement'), and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'Similar like India we are seeing'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some run-on sentences and comma splices. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. More attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage is needed.
