Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt by discussing both the view supporting new fast railway lines and the view advocating for improvements to existing public transport, whilst also offering a concluding opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and somewhat superficial. For example, the arguments regarding saving time and comparing systems to Australia or India are underdeveloped and repetitive. Generalisations are made without sufficient supporting evidence or elaboration. Consequently, this performance aligns closely with Band 5, where the task is addressed, but ideas remain underdeveloped and the position is not always clearly sustained throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay displays some organizational structure with discernible introductory, body, and concluding sections, but overall progression is hindered by poor paragraphing and a lack of clear cohesive devices. Transitions between sentences are frequently abrupt or missing entirely, as seen in phrases like 'On other hand people assume' and 'The goverment should spend'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation errors disrupt the flow. The division of paragraphs does not follow a logical progression of fully formed arguments. These features are characteristic of Band 4, where information and ideas are not arranged coherently enough to ensure smooth progression.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is basic, repetitive, and heavily constrained. The student relies on simple terms like 'money', 'time', and 'people', while misspelled words and incorrect word choices appear frequently, such as 'Now a day' instead of 'Nowadays', 'connectivety', 'goverment', 'alote', 'inprove', 'dut' for 'due', and 'conculsion'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are largely unsuccessful due to severe errors in spelling and collocation. Communication is occasionally strained for the reader as a result. This vocabulary profile sits firmly at Band 4, reflecting basic and repetitive word usage with frequent errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex forms that result in faulty syntax, missing auxiliary verbs, and frequent agreement errors, such as 'people does not have', 'energy price is rising so individual shifting', and 'after this they start thing build new one'. Punctuation is largely neglected, with missing capitalisation and run-on phrasing. Errors are dense and frequent throughout the text, often distorting the intended meaning and causing difficulty for the reader. This performance aligns with Band 4, where a very limited range of structures is used and errors are frequent.
