Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses both views regarding high-speed rail and improving existing public transport, and the student presents a personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is limited and often repetitive. Phrases like 'some people think it is very important for people because they think new lines modern and we travel comfortable' lack depth and logical extension. The student's position is clear in the conclusion and body paragraphs, but the arguments remain underdeveloped, touching upon ideas superficially without exploring broader socio-economic or environmental implications. Therefore, this performance aligns closely with Band 5, where the task is addressed, but ideas remain limited and under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is organized into distinct paragraphs with basic introduction and conclusion structures. However, the overall progression is heavily disrupted by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. The links between sentences often feel mechanical or inaccurate, such as starting multiple sentences with 'This is because' or 'For example' followed by ideas that do not clearly illustrate the preceding statement. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion is weak. Pronoun referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in phrases like 'this is issue has become increasingly important for those poeple that they not prefer'. These characteristics reflect Band 5, where there is some organization and paragraphing, but overall progression is unclear and cohesive devices are inadequate or inaccurate.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by numerous spelling and word-choice errors. Examples include 'individulas', 'its is', 'big figure of money', 'builting', 'eaasy', 'imporatnt', 'severals', 'varities', 'helth', and 'bothe'. The student attempts less common items like 'allocate' and 'enhance', but these are often misused or misspelled (e.g., 'enhancing under useful public transport'). The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for conveying basic meaning, though errors cause significant difficulty for the reader at times. This corresponds to a Band 4, bordering on Band 5 due to some attempts at topic-related vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, with frequent errors that persistently strain the reader's comprehension. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at complex structures are consistently faulty, such as 'In my opinion, bothe views correct in their own ways but I prefer to government should spent fund only improving public transport because our government should not focusing helth and education.' There are widespread errors in verb forms, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and basic sentence construction throughout the text. Punctuation and word order are also frequently problematic. These widespread, frequent errors that often distort meaning place this response squarely in Band 4.
