Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people have their own opinions for government to spend money for new railway lines construction for fast trains,so they can go to other cities as fast as possible but many people oppose that and their perspectives is that government should spend money on improving the public transport that already exists.

By spending big amount of money on new railway lines construction,we can get fast trains so we can go to other cities with comfort and as fast as possible.Time is really important for everyone, through new railways lines we can save our time in long distant cities. In emergency,we can also use that transport to get to other cities as fast as possible. It is really beneficial for everyone. But these type of projects can only be constructed by large sums of money. So,it will be a big burden on government because government also have to manage other transports.

But on the other hand, many people believe that money should be spent on existing public transport.Public transport not only includes trains that are used for taking people from city to city but also includes metro, buses and subway. If money should be spent on improving these existing public transport then we can go anywhere in that city.If the large sum of money spends on existing transport then government can also make a big chains for these transports in the city.It will be really useful for the office workers, students, senior citizens and for many other people. But,this will take time also with money. Many subway or metro stations will get construct and it can also be the reason of traffic in the city.Because, there is always more population in cities than other rural sides.

In my perspective, government should spend money equally on both parts.I will take an example of Japan.Japan has the strongest transport system than other countries. If we points on Tokyo. There is large number of transport chain divided equally that we can go anywhere in the city. But if we want to go to other cities, there are also the world fastest trains known as Shinkansen. Its my opinion to spend equally.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—constructing new high-speed rail lines versus improving existing public transport—and presents a clear personal opinion in the conclusion, suggesting an equal division of funds and referencing Japan. Ideas are generally extended, such as explaining how high-speed trains save time for long-distance travel and how upgrading local transit aids commuters and students. However, the development of ideas occasionally feels repetitive and lacks depth in certain sections, which aligns well with a Band 6.0 descriptor. The position is maintained throughout, but some arguments are somewhat simplistic and generalized.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each viewpoint, and a distinct concluding opinion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty and mechanical, with frequent misuse or lack of spacing after punctuation (e.g., missing spaces after commas and periods throughout the text). Referencing and cohesive devices are basic, with repetitive use of transition words like 'But' and 'If'. These issues indicate that the organisation has mechanical flaws, which fits the Band 6.0 profile.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary to discuss transport systems, employing terms such as 'burden', 'public transport', 'population', and 'commuters' implicitly. However, there are noticeable limitations and occasional inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'new railway lines construction' instead of 'the construction of new railway lines', 'long distant cities' instead of 'distant cities', and 'points on Tokyo' instead of 'focus on Tokyo' or 'look at Tokyo'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but lexical control is inconsistent, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures like 'If money should be spent...' and relative clauses. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, most notably a systemic issue with spacing after punctuation marks, missing articles (e.g., 'government also have to manage other transports'), and subject-verb agreement or pluralization issues ('these type of projects', 'transport chain'). While these errors are noticeable and detract from the fluency of the text, they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
