Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only minimally, as it falls short of the required 250-word minimum, containing only 224 words. The student attempts to discuss both views regarding fast trains versus upgrading existing public transport and provides a brief opinion, but the ideas remain very limited and under-developed. Examples given, such as mentioning various countries like Pakistan, India, and China, are superficial and lack proper expansion or support. The position of the writer is somewhat unclear due to the fragmented nature of the arguments and the lack of a fully structured conclusion. To move to a higher band, the student must write at least the minimum word count and fully develop each part of the prompt with coherent supporting arguments and specific examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The essay displays some basic organization with discernible paragraphs, but information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. There is a lack of clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences and ideas feel abrupt and disjointed. Cohesive devices are either missing, inadequate, or repetitive, making the text difficult to follow at times. For instance, sentences like 'Generally countries used old structure of railway lines like pakistan, india, srilanka and a lot of' disrupt the flow of logic. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion needs significant improvement. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices accurately and ensure a logical, seamless progression of ideas throughout the entire essay.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally strain the reader's understanding. Examples of lexical limitations include 'transpot', 'tarins', 'counterys', 'bulid', 'popluation', and 'infarastructure'. The student relies heavily on simple words and struggles to use less common vocabulary accurately, leading to unnatural collocations such as 'spend a lot number of amount'. To improve to a higher band, the writer must expand their lexical range, learn correct word forms, and pay closer attention to spelling and precise word choice suitable for academic writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of basic sentences that are frequently marred by errors. Errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and punctuation are frequent and often distort the meaning. For example, expressions like 'the rate of popluation world wide rise' and 'many accident were heppend many people are dides' demonstrate a lack of control over basic grammatical patterns. Complex sentences are rarely attempted, and when they are, they contain persistent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student must demonstrate better control over simple sentence structures, reduce basic grammatical errors, and incorporate accurate complex sentence forms.
