IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent times, a asection of people argue that it is crucial to spend a significant amount for the construction of new railway lines which connecting metropolitian cities. On the other hand, another domain believe that the exopendature should be used for developing the current public transport. I would argue that, it is better to build new railway lines beacuse it will reduce atmospheric pollution to a great extent along with making people more convienent to travel.
The main reason whether the people supporting railways is using very fast trains like electric trains cause less atmospheric pollution. For instance, compared to other transports which runs by burning of fuels, emit a significant amount of carbon which leasing to atmospheric pollution. As their is no carbon emission, it reduces the vulnaberities in the atmosphere. In addition to that, a train can accomadate more passengers than any other transportation make people more comfortable. The infrastructure and seating arrangements are extremely acceptable owing to enabling people to move around the train. Moreover, food and water are also available in the train which makes the journey easier.
However, atmospheric pollution created by the petrol and disel vehicles. Carbon emitted by these vehicles significantly increased the atmospheric pollution which leads to various problems like global warming and ozone depletion. Rise in the demand of number of passengers leads to rise in number of public transports like buses while run on fuel to satisfy the passengers. This pratice agin cause pollutionAlong with that, noise pollution is the other remarkable issue caused by public transport. Compared to travelling in train, it is exceptional and comfortable to travel in train.
In conclusion, it is better to construct railway lines between cities which provide smooth transportation and convenience to the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You state a clear preference for building new railway lines in the introduction and conclusion, and you give relevant reasons, including lower emissions and greater passenger capacity. However, the discussion of the opposing view is not fully developed: the paragraph mainly describes pollution from fuel-powered vehicles rather than explaining why improving existing public transport is a worthwhile use of funds. The comparison also becomes unclear when you say it is “exceptional and comfortable to travel in train.” Several supporting claims, such as the availability of food and water, do not directly establish why new high-speed lines should be prioritised. Develop both sides with distinct, relevant arguments and explain why your preferred investment is more beneficial.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the reader can identify your overall preference. You also use linking expressions such as “On the other hand,” “For instance” and “In conclusion.” However, progression within the body paragraphs is uneven: the first moves from emissions to comfort and onboard food, while the second shifts between pollution, passenger demand and noise without clearly explaining the case for upgrading existing transport. Some connections are inaccurate or confusing, particularly “This practice again cause pollution” and the final comparison about train travel. Organise each paragraph around one main argument, then use clear explanations and examples to show how each point supports that argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You attempt topic-related vocabulary, including “atmospheric pollution,” “carbon emission,” “global warming” and “ozone depletion,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate enough to make parts difficult to understand. Examples include “another domain believe,” “the vulnerabilities in the atmosphere,” and “the infrastructure and seating arrangements are extremely acceptable.” There are also frequent spelling errors, such as “metropolitian,” “exopendature,” “convienent” and “accomadate.” Choose more natural expressions and check spelling carefully; precise terms such as “high-speed rail,” “existing transport networks” and “reduce emissions” would make your arguments clearer.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer structures, including “I would argue that…” and clauses beginning with “which” and “while,” but control is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic sentence patterns and more complex attempts: “a asection of people argue,” “another domain believe,” and “which connecting metropolitian cities” show problems with articles, agreement and verb forms. In “Compared to other transports which runs by burning of fuels, emit…,” the sentence lacks a clear grammatical subject and structure. Punctuation and spacing are also unreliable, as in “pollutionAlong with that.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build complex sentences with correctly formed clauses and consistent punctuation.
