IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Certain critics assert that in various parts of the worls it is crucial to allocate significant financial resources in developing new train tracks for rapid intercity transits. While others hold the view that considerble budget should be used in enhancing present commuter networks.

In my opinion, updrading current transit systems is important for smooth flow of goods on intercity routes but establishing modern rail infrastructure including bullet trains for linking the metropolitan areas will elevate the overall structure of transport as well as increasing the facilities for the residents.

On the one hand, in globally diverse regions government should invest substntial funds in developing new train tracks including high speed rail systems for connecting the urban centers. This will be beneficial for the citizens in their daily base movements. They can esily travel across cities for their work, health , education, and other purposes. As a result pupil will cut off their use of private vehicles which in turn will prove to be an important contributer in reducing environmental pollution. The rate of accidents will also drop significantly. This course of development will prove to be advantageous for foreigners in that country as many international students cannot afford their private cars for travelling to their universities.

On the other hand, in the developing countries like Pakistan where it challenging for the state to start advanced rail tracks. Enhancing the existing modes of transport is very important for the benefits of the population. Governing bodies must take initiatives to change the transport systems for the wellness of citizens.

To conclude, while high speed rail offer a revolutionary way to connect distant metropolitan areas, upgrading existing urban transit directly benefits a larger share of the daily commuting public. Ultimately, a balanced approach is required which can pair efficient, reliable local network with high speed routes.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the debate and state a position: you support improving current systems while also recognising the value of high-speed links, concluding that a balanced approach is best. The benefits you give for new railways—less private-car use, lower pollution and fewer accidents—are relevant. However, the case for improving existing transport is much less developed: the Pakistan example is introduced, but you do not explain what improvements are needed or how they would benefit commuters. Some claims, such as the benefit to international students, are also asserted rather than supported. To strengthen the response, develop each side with a specific example and explain how it supports your view.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the discussion. Overall progression is clear, but the second body paragraph is very brief and does not build its point beyond the Pakistan example and a general call for government action. The introduction also combines your position with several ideas in a long sentence, making the relationship between them less clear. Use linking and referencing more precisely, and ensure each body paragraph develops one main claim through explanation or an example.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “high speed rail,” “metropolitan areas,” “commuter networks,” and “environmental pollution.” These choices show an effort to discuss transport and its wider effects. However, inaccurate spelling and unnatural word combinations reduce precision: “worls,” “considerble,” “daily base movements,” and “important contributer” are examples. Phrases such as “change the transport systems for the wellness of citizens” are also vague or awkward. Aim for accurate, natural collocations rather than choosing elaborate wording; for example, describe “daily travel” and “reduce pollution.” Proofreading spelling and checking word forms would make your meaning more fluent and reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While others hold the view…” and a result clause with “which in turn.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some sentence structures and grammatical patterns need more control. For example, “in the developing countries like Pakistan where it challenging” is missing a verb, and “high speed rail offer” has a subject–verb agreement error. The opening sentence fragment beginning “While others…” is also not securely connected to the preceding sentence. Review clause construction, agreement, and articles, and punctuate long sentences carefully. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
