IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

there is a debate on goveronment should spend amount of money to construct new railways network among the cities or should spend money to improve current public transport, In my opinion improving the current public transonport structure will be fruitful to all the nations living in the under-developed countries,

One of the main element of that debate is to invest in the constructing of modern railways to speed up the travel route or to minimize the usage of time while travelling, Actually this can bring the more benefits as compare to invest in other ways to improve public fascilities. the fast rail tracks bring so many vital opportunities to decentralize the people to live and work in the metropolitan city to work, collaborate on the daily basis while living in their home in the rural areas,

on the other hand and in my point of view, upgrading the local transport system such local buses, trams, metro buses uses in the daily life. should be highly appreciated to upgrade the main reason behind that is to encourage people use of public transport while doing their daiy routine work which can eliminate the environmental pollution as well as make the healthy wibes every where. students, job holders using currently their own motor vehicles will be able to approach public transport instead of their own private motors. which can bring the hormony of and stability in the city and also urge people to adopt the well maintained, upgraded public transport.

in conclusion, the high speed rail tracks are crucial for developed nations and is the marvellous of engineering. But goveronment should priorotize on the improvment of local transport system. as most communities struggle to cross from one location to other while using the public transport but with the advent of the modern infastructure of local transport system people will be able to adopt that system quite easily as well will encourage other to adopt it instead of their own motor vehicles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both sides of the discussion and state a clear preference for improving existing local transport. The benefits you identify are relevant: high-speed rail may connect rural residents with metropolitan work, while better buses and metro services could encourage people to leave private vehicles at home and reduce pollution. However, the two views are not developed equally. The case for new railways is mainly about travel time and access to city jobs, while the case for local transport has more explanation but still relies on broad claims such as creating “harmony” and stability. To strengthen the response, explain who benefits, how, and under what circumstances, and support the comparison with a specific example. Your conclusion restates your position, though its claim that high-speed rail is crucial for developed nations is not fully explained.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “on the other hand” and “in conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument, and the reader can generally follow your preference. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “One of the main element of that debate” does not clearly introduce the first side, and the long second body paragraph moves from transport examples to pollution, private vehicles, and city stability without clear links between each point. Several sentences run together, making relationships harder to follow. Use clearer topic sentences, divide long sentences, and make each paragraph develop one central idea with explicit links between its supporting points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “decentralize,” “metropolitan,” “environmental pollution,” and “infrastructure,” and the main ideas are usually understandable. There are also some effective attempts to express consequences, such as encouraging people to use public transport instead of private vehicles. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make meaning unclear: “public fascilities,” “healthy wibes,” “hormony,” and “marvellous of engineering” are examples. Phrases such as “uses in the daily life” and “cross from one location to other” are also not natural in this context. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations before choosing more ambitious vocabulary, and proofread spelling carefully. More precise transport terms would make your comparisons clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses explaining purpose and consequence, as in the discussion of railways and rural residents. The overall meaning can usually be recovered, but control of sentence boundaries and clause structure is inconsistent. For example, “students, job holders using currently their own motor vehicles will be able to approach public transport” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “the high speed rail tracks are crucial for developed nations and is…” has a subject–verb agreement problem. Several sentences are joined with commas or full stops in ways that leave fragments, including “which can bring the hormony…” and “should be highly appreciated to upgrade…”. Work on complete clauses, agreement, articles, and punctuation, then check that each sentence has a clear subject and main verb.
