IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is a growing debate reagarding whether, construction of new railway lines are important or improving existing pulic transport.I agree with both statments.
Proponent of the first view calim that spending large money on constructing new railyway line, because local traviling like buses or some personal rides are expensive for those people who can not afforad it. Trains have fixed amount to travel between one city to another city. for example in Germany huge number of people how travel by trains, beacuse they charge mini amount to travel anywhere, and if in case people when miss there trains they booke specail convinece and they chrage big amount to their main destination. Therefore, its important to construct new raily form city to city to make travel easier for people.
Conversly, those who advocate that spend money on existing pulic transport is also the valid point. people who daily use public transport for their work or study face a lot of difficulties to reached on time. Specially students who want to reach in class at time due to transport issues they arrived late in the class and miss their starting leactures and further not concentrate on whole leacture during class. Government should spend more money on public transport, like more buses mean every one reached on time at their destination and not be marked as late commers and never miss their starting points.
While both the views have merit, i personally agree with the new development. although it is not usefll in current time but may be useful and helpful for people in futrure.
Considering both perpective, the evidence cleary suporrt mu opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both sides of the discussion and state a preference for new railway development: “I personally agree with the new development.” The examples about train travel in Germany and students arriving late give the response some relevant support. However, the reasons are not always clearly connected to the proposed spending. For instance, the Germany example focuses on train fares and missed trains rather than explaining how very fast intercity lines would benefit passengers. The case for improving existing transport is also mainly about buses and punctuality, with little detail on how investment would solve these problems. Your final sentence refers to “the evidence” but does not summarise or strengthen your position. Develop each view with a clearer explanation and make your opinion consistent and specific.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “Conversely” and “While both the views have merit” help signal changes in direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because ideas are linked loosely or repeated. In the first body paragraph, the discussion moves from local travel costs to train fares and then to missed trains without clearly showing how these points support new high-speed lines. The second paragraph also shifts from students’ lateness to buses without a clear explanation of the link. The final sentence, “Considering both perspective,” repeats the conclusion rather than adding a clear closing point. Use topic sentences and connect each example directly to the paragraph’s main claim.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “constructing new railway lines,” “public transport,” and “destination,” so the reader can identify the subject. However, the range is limited and several spelling errors or inaccurate word choices make parts of the response harder to understand, such as “railyway,” “pulic,” “convinece,” and “commers.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “spending large money,” “fixed amount to travel,” and “starting points” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Repetition of “people,” “travel,” and “transport” further limits variety. Build a bank of accurate transport collocations and check spelling carefully; use precise terms such as fares, services, routes, and punctuality where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional phrase (“if in case people when miss there trains”) and a contrast clause (“although it is not usefll in current time”). However, many sentences contain errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and verb forms, which sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. For example, “construction of new railway lines are important” has a mismatch between the subject and verb, while “people who daily use public transport … face a lot of difficulties to reached” combines an awkward clause with an incorrect verb form. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, particularly at sentence beginnings. Practise building accurate subject–verb patterns and use shorter, complete sentences before adding subordinate clauses.
