Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give a clear overall preference for new railway lines, especially in the opening and conclusion, and you mention reasons such as faster journeys and time savings. However, the discussion of the two views is uneven and only minimally developed. The case for high-speed rail is repeated rather than explained in detail, while the opposing view is presented mainly through claims that public transport is slow, polluting, expensive, or poorly equipped, without explaining why investment in improving it could help. The response therefore only partially fulfils the instruction to discuss both views and support your opinion. To strengthen it, explain the benefits of upgrading existing buses or trains and compare these with the wider benefits and costs of new high-speed lines. The stated length requirement is met; eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an opening, several body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and basic signposts such as “First of all,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” show an attempt to organise the discussion. However, progression is difficult to follow because ideas are repeated and the relationship between sentences is often unclear. For example, the first two body paragraphs both argue for new railway lines using similar points about speed and saving time, while the paragraph beginning “Secondly” shifts to the opposing view but then repeats the writer’s rejection of it. Linking phrases such as “Due to” and “In addition to” are not used effectively to connect complete ideas. Group each viewpoint into a focused paragraph, develop each reason in sequence, and use clear references and transitions to show how examples support your claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use a small set of relevant topic words, including “railway lines,” “train,” “public transport,” “pollution,” and “facilities,” so the general subject is identifiable. However, vocabulary is basic and repetitive, and several inaccurate word choices or collocations strain the reader. Examples include “citizen transport” for public transport, “eastablishing” for establishing, “saw people numerous view,” and “money spent on the new railway lines for very fast.” Spelling errors such as “numreous” also reduce clarity. Build a more precise range for discussing transport investment, journey times, accessibility, and emissions. Check spelling and learn common word partnerships, such as “invest in rail infrastructure” and “improve existing services,” rather than repeating “money spent” and “better facilities.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt some longer sentences using connectors such as “Because” and “Therefore,” but control of sentence structure is very limited, and frequent errors sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to follow. For example, “other argue” lacks subject–verb agreement, “So, he travel on the train” has an incorrect verb form, and “money do not spent” uses an incorrect passive construction. Articles, plurals, and tense are also inconsistent, as in “several peoples” and “In the past, people travel on the horse.” Punctuation and spacing around sentence boundaries are often faulty, with several sentences joined or separated awkwardly. Practise accurate simple sentence patterns first, then add subordinate clauses; check agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries during revision.
