IELTS Writing Task 2 question
In a number of countries, some people think it is necessary to spend large sums of money on constructing new railway lines for very fast trains between cities. Others believe the money should be spent on improving existing public transport.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In many countries, it is often argued by some people that ample amount of investment is required to built new railway facilities for faster trains between cities, whereas others believe that investment is required to improve the available public transportation system. Although both perspectives have certain merits, I agree with the latter notion.
On the one hand, believers of the first viewpoint opine that extra lines are required for bullet trains between cities. This is because increase in the number of faster trains will allow more people to use this time convenient and safer transportation method. For instance, Dhaka have Metro Rail facility in only one route that helps a lot of working professionals move easily from one place to another. Installing more lines will give access to so many other users to use this faster transporation mode. Therefore, building more lines for fast trains is a very useful investment.
On the other hand, many people, including me, believe that available public transport system needs further investment. The primary reason is that majority of the people are public transport users. Moreover, a lot of people are employeed in this sector and planned investment in existing transportation will surely ensure better services to the users. For instance, investing on AI cameras can bring noticeable changes on traffic management. Furthermore, this will lessen the chances of road accidents as public transport is the only way for long distance journey in developing countries. Thus, investing on existing public transport is more beneficial as the users of public transportation is very big in number.
In conclusion, while both the statements have particular advantages, I strongly believe that ample investment is mostly necessary for available public transports because this carries the majority of users.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a consistent preference for improving existing public transport, so the response fulfils the main parts of the task. The case for new high-speed lines is supported with the Dhaka Metro example, while the second view includes points about the number of users and traffic management. However, some reasoning is not fully developed: the example of AI cameras concerns road traffic rather than directly explaining how investment in existing public transport would improve services, and the claim that public transport is the only option for long-distance travel in developing countries is broad. Explain more precisely what improvements would benefit passengers and why, and develop the comparison between the two investment choices further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical, however, with “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Thus” repeatedly introducing points rather than showing their exact relationship. There is also some unclear referencing: in “this will lessen the chances of road accidents,” it is not immediately clear whether “this” means AI cameras or investment more generally. Use more precise links between claims and examples, and make references explicit to strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “investment,” “transportation system,” “traffic management,” and “road accidents,” and your meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “primary reason” and “noticeable changes.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “ample amount of investment,” “time convenient,” “investing on AI cameras,” and “the users … is very big in number.” Spelling errors such as “transporation” and “employeed” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and precise terms—for example, “substantial investment,” “time-saving,” and “investing in AI-based cameras”—and proofread spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction (“Although both perspectives have certain merits…”) and a reason clause beginning “This is because.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some errors remain in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction. Examples include “required to built” instead of “required to build,” “Dhaka have” instead of “Dhaka has,” and “the users … is” instead of “the users … are.” The sentence beginning “Moreover, a lot of people are employeed…” also needs clearer grammatical construction. Review subject–verb agreement and infinitive forms, and check each sentence for a clear subject and verb while retaining your complex structures.
