Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views and give a clear preference for constructing new railway lines, especially in the opening and conclusion. You also acknowledge that existing services need maintenance and remain useful to some passengers. However, the discussion is only partial: the benefits of high-speed rail are asserted rather than explained with a specific example, and the opposing view is briefly described without showing why investment in current transport might be preferable. The recommendation that governments fund both options also makes your preference less fully reasoned. The response is below the required 250 words, which limits the space available to develop and support your ideas. Explain the trade-offs and add a relevant example to make your position more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on existing transport, a recommendation, and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the two views and your preference. However, progression between ideas is limited, and several points are repeated, particularly the need to build new lines and improve existing systems. Linking words such as “While” and “In conclusion” are used, but the contrast introduced by “While” is not developed smoothly, and the final recommendation appears abruptly. Some sentence boundaries and punctuation also make the flow difficult to follow. Organise the body into two clearly developed paragraphs—one for each view—and use linking phrases to show how each reason supports your argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant transport vocabulary, including “railway lines,” “high speed train,” “existing transport system,” and “servicing.” This gives the response a clear connection to the topic. However, the range is limited and several expressions are repeated, such as “spending money,” “more good idea,” and “existing.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, including “traveling more faster,” “from one place to another in a very short interval,” and “they also need proper guidance.” Spelling errors such as “prospective,” “enhace,” “thise,” and “hugh” also reduce precision. Build a more varied set of topic-specific phrases and check spelling and natural word combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example by using “while” and “because,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and complex attempts often contain errors. In the opening, “investing more money … are important” has subject–verb disagreement, while “technology are making” repeats this problem. Other examples include “other think,” “they are also need,” and “constructing new railway lines are more good idea,” where agreement, verb forms, articles, or comparison structures are faulty. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, with unnecessary spaces before commas and capitals mid-sentence. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them using subordinate clauses while checking agreement and verb forms.
