IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The given process illustrets how geothermal power plant is used to produce electricity. Overall, the process devided into 5 diffrent parts, from cold water to the generator turbine.
Firstly, in the begining of the process they need to pumped down a large amoun or water, almost 4.5km under the surface. Then, they need to injection well in the geothermal zone under the hot rocks. When the water become hot enough, they need to pumped up the hot water this is called the prodection well step. After that the water has been no longer stay on the lequide form it become steam.
Meanwhile, when the hot water pumped up from the surface, it need to go through with step 4. In this step, in a condenser the hot water converted to the steam. Which go through a tiney pipe to the generator turbine. Powered by turbine the steam become electricity, which then suppled to the people by the electric tower. It is the final ste

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence and include its main stages: water is sent underground, heated by the hot rocks, brought back up, converted to steam, and used in electricity generation. The reference to the 4.5 km depth is also accurate. However, the overview is unclear when it says “from cold water to the generator turbine,” and the description does not clearly explain that steam powers the turbine, which in turn drives the generator. The final claim that electricity is supplied “to the people by the electric tower” is not shown; the diagram shows transmission lines and a pylon. Clarify the overall transformation and distinguish the roles of the turbine and generator, while keeping each stage factually precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable sequence, supported by “Firstly,” “Then,” and “After that,” and it is divided into paragraphs. This gives the reader a basic sense of the process’s order. However, some links are mechanical or unclear: “Meanwhile” does not introduce a simultaneous event, and “Which go through a tiney pipe” has an unclear reference. The transition from the production well to the condenser is also difficult to follow because the sentence beginning “when the hot water pumped up” is not clearly connected to the next one. Use a straightforward chronological structure and make each sentence’s subject explicit—for example, state that hot water enters the condenser, where it becomes steam, before the steam powers the turbine.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “production well,” “condenser,” and “steam,” which helps convey the diagram’s subject. However, spelling errors such as “illustrets,” “diffrent,” “prodection,” and “lequide” are noticeable, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate. “Generator turbine” blurs two separate components, while “electric tower” is not the appropriate term for the pylon or transmission system. Phrases such as “a large amoun or water” and “tiney pipe” are also imprecise. Build accuracy by learning the standard names of the components and using process verbs such as “pump,” “heat,” “convert,” and “drive” in their correct combinations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a time clause beginning “When the water become hot enough” and a sequence of process steps. However, some errors in verb forms, sentence construction, and punctuation make parts difficult to follow. For example, “the process devided” needs a passive form, and “they need to pumped down” has an incorrect verb pattern. In “When the water become hot enough, they need to pumped up the hot water this is called…,” the tense and clause boundaries are unclear. The sentence fragment “Which go through a tiney pipe” also lacks a clear main clause. Practise accurate passive constructions for processes and separate linked ideas with appropriate punctuation.
