IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This diagram illustrates the production of electricity by using the geothermal energy in 5 stages.
Overall, this is a linear process of the production of electricity from geothermal energy includes 5 stages namely, cold water, the injection well, the production well, condenser and generator turbine.
To begin with, the cold water is pumped down to 4.5 kilometers long injection wells inside the earth, from there it moves through a very hot area of the geothermal zone of hot rocks, which warms the water. This followed by the warm water reaches to the production well from it pumped out of well in the form of steam and placed inside the condenser.
The steam moves out of the condenser in the narrow space to power the turbine, which rotates turbine in circular motion. Subsequently, this motion of turbine power the generator and Generator generates electricity that transfers into gird lines for the use.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the process as a sequence and include its main stages, from cold water being sent underground to electricity being generated. The 4.5-kilometre depth and the heating of water in the geothermal zone are relevant details, and the overview gives the reader a general sense of the process. However, some stages are not described accurately: the production well brings hot water to the surface, where it enters the condenser and is converted into steam; it is not pumped out of the well as steam. The overview also calls the stages “condenser and generator turbine,” which merges two separate components and omits the turbine as a distinct stage. Clarifying these points and describing the final electricity transmission more precisely would make the account more complete and accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, supported by “To begin with” and “Subsequently,” and its paragraphing separates the overview from the process details. This gives the reader a coherent route through the diagram. Some connections, however, are awkward or unclear: “from there it moves” has an uncertain reference, while “This followed by the warm water reaches to the production well” makes the transition difficult to follow. The overview’s list also combines the generator and turbine, disrupting the otherwise logical staging. Use clearer links such as “The heated water then rises through the production well” and keep each component distinct. This would make the progression smoother and less dependent on mechanical sequencing.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “injection well,” “condenser,” “turbine,” and “generator,” so the main subject is communicated. There are also attempts at more specific description, such as “pumped down” and “transfers into” power lines. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “5 stages namely” is awkward, “narrow space” does not clearly describe the pipe, and “gird lines” is a spelling error for “grid lines.” “Production of electricity” is repeated, and “rotates turbine in circular motion” is imprecise. Aim for concise process language and accurate collocations, for example, “steam flows through a pipe” and “the generator produces electricity.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “which warms the water” and a sequence linked with “Subsequently.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some errors in sentence structure and verb forms reduce accuracy. For example, “Overall, this is a linear process … includes 5 stages” joins two structures without a grammatical link; “This followed by” is missing a verb; and “from it pumped out of well” lacks a clear subject and auxiliary. There are also agreement and article problems in “this motion of turbine power the generator” and “the generator generates electricity.” Build complete clauses with explicit subjects and check verb agreement, articles, and tense. More consistently accurate complex sentences would strengthen the response.
