IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The process diagram illustrates the process of generating electricity by using geotharmal power.
Overall, it is five stages, man made linear process. It begins with puming the cold water beneath the surface and constatnt rotation by turbine, produce the electricity.
The first step start with the pump cold water under thye ground which is a 4.5km length, in 2nd stage the water is injected with deep pressure into a a geotharmal zone . This zone is covered with hot rocks and used for making the water extream hot.
In the third stage the hot water is ready to produce for pupmping up towards the condensor and this is the 4rth step of the process. hot water produce steam nad by the hep of turbine and ge

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the process as geothermal electricity generation and includes several relevant stages: cold water is sent underground, heated by hot rocks, and brought back up toward a condenser. However, it only partially reports the diagram. The overview says there are five stages but does not clearly summarise the full sequence or explain that steam powers a turbine, which drives a generator to produce electricity. The final sentence is cut off, leaving the turbine and generator stages incomplete. Some details are also unclear, such as describing the water as injected “with deep pressure.” The response is below the required 150 words, which contributes to the limited coverage. To improve, describe every main stage accurately and finish with a clear account of how electricity is generated.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the report into an introduction, an overview and a stage-by-stage account. Sequencing phrases such as “The first step,” “in 2nd stage” and “In the third stage” help the reader follow the process. However, the progression is incomplete: the account stops during the final stage, and the overview’s phrase “constant rotation by turbine” does not clearly connect the stages. Several sentences are difficult to follow because ideas are crowded together or separated by irregular spacing and punctuation. Use one paragraph for the overview and another for the complete sequence, with clear links such as “After this” and “Finally.” Ensure each sentence finishes one process step before moving to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “hot rocks,” “injected” and “steam,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to understand: “geotharmal,” “puming,” “constatnt,” “extream” and “condensor.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “produce for pupmping up” and “deep pressure.” Use accurate terms from the diagram, for example “cold water is pumped down,” “heated by the hot rocks,” and “hot water is pumped to the surface.” Proofreading spelling and choosing standard process collocations would make the description clearer and more appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer structures, including “It begins with…” and “which is a 4.5km length,” but sentence forms are often incomplete or inaccurately constructed. For example, “Overall, it is five stages” lacks the grammatical structure needed to describe the number of stages, while “The first step start with the pump cold water” has problems with agreement and verb form. The final sentence, “hot water produce steam nad by the hep of turbine and ge,” is unfinished and does not communicate a complete relationship between the stages. Most sentences contain errors, and these sometimes obscure meaning. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and passive forms suited to process descriptions, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The hot water is converted into steam.”
