IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
This diagram illustrates what is the process of geothermal energy to make the electricty.
Overall, this diagram shows five stages start from the first stage of Cold water and the second stage is The injection well, and then third stage is The production well, and fourth stage Condenser and last stage fifth statge is Generator.
First stage describe clod water flows from 4.5 km hight and clod water pumped down into the second stage "The injection well"the m. Further, water flows from the Geothermal zone(hot rocks) into third stage "the production well". In production well the hot water pumped up into the next stage. From the same hight of 4.5km, hot water pumped up into the four stage "Condenser" . In condenser stage steam is produce and jump into the last stage "Generator".
In last stage, Turbine powered by steam and then Generator powered by turbine and produce electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and include several key stages, including water being heated by hot rocks, rising through the production well, and steam powering the turbine. However, the account is only partially complete: the overview lists five stages but incorrectly names the generator as the final stage without clearly explaining that the turbine is a separate stage before it. The description also misreads the 4.5 km label as the height from which water flows; it indicates the depth of the injection well. The condenser’s role is mentioned, but the sequence and conversion from hot water to steam are not clearly explained. The response is one word below the required minimum. A more accurate overview and fuller explanation of the stages would strengthen the summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing the process in sequence. Stage markers such as “First stage,” “Further,” and “In last stage” help the reader follow the general order. However, the repeated use of “stage” makes the progression mechanical, and some links between steps are unclear. For example, “water flows from the Geothermal zone… into third stage” does not clearly explain that water is heated underground before being pumped up. The sentence about the 4.5 km height also interrupts the sequence and confuses the relationship between the wells and condenser. Use clearer transitions and refer to each component consistently to improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “Geothermal zone,” “Condenser,” “Turbine,” and “Generator,” which makes the topic identifiable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the process difficult to understand. “Electricty” and “clod” are misspellings, while “steam is produce and jump” is not an appropriate way to describe the movement of steam. “Hight” is also used where “depth” is needed. Aim for precise process verbs and accurate spelling, such as “is converted into steam,” “rises,” and “is pumped underground.” This would make the description clearer and more suitable for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the overall sequence can usually be followed. However, grammatical errors are frequent, particularly in verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “five stages start” needs a passive or singular construction, while “steam is produce” should use the past participle. The opening phrase “illustrates what is the process” is also incorrectly formed; a direct structure such as “illustrates the process by which…” would be clearer. Some sentences run together, as in “the injection well”the m,” and punctuation around quoted labels is inconsistent. Practise accurate passive forms, which are useful for process descriptions, and check each sentence for a complete, correctly punctuated structure.
