IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This diagram shows the whole process of converting geothermal energy into electricity. This process helps the government most in import and export. We are using a lot of machines to produce electricity.
Firstly,we have a cold water and put it into very hot rocks about 4.5 kilometre down. We have many type of injections to mix in it and we also add one injection well in it.Then this water goes to next part which is caled geothermal zone of hote rocks. After passing this, the water become hot and pumped up to condenser.
This condenser changes this hot water into steam form or smoke type.
There is pipe that connect the condenser to next tubine and generator. After changes into steam it goes into turbine and goes through the process init and at last it goes into generator which have more power to convert it into electricity and finally it reached to electricity pole.
To conclude, after passing through all this process we can make a lot of electricity by using dams water. Our government should work on dams to save water.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the general subject and describe several stages, including cold water being sent underground, heating near hot rocks, water returning to the surface, and steam driving a turbine before electricity is generated. However, the account is only partially accurate and includes unsupported claims that weaken coverage of the process. For example, “many type of injections” and “add one injection well” do not describe separate additions; the diagram shows one injection well. The condenser is said to change hot water into steam, but the sequence and key role of the production well could be explained more precisely. The conclusion about dams and saving water is unrelated, and the claim about imports and exports is not shown. Focus on an accurate overview and the diagram’s stages, without adding outside ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic sequence, signalled by “Firstly,” “After passing this,” and “To conclude,” and the reader can follow the broad movement from underground heating to electricity generation. However, progression is weakened by unclear links and abrupt shifts. The opening moves from the process to government imports and exports, while the ending introduces dams, neither of which belongs to the diagram. Several stages are crowded into long sentences, especially the sentence beginning “There is pipe that connect…,” making the order of events difficult to track. Use separate paragraphs for an overview and the main stages, and connect each stage explicitly: water is pumped down, heated, pumped up, converted to steam, and used to drive the turbine and generator.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” “turbine,” and “generator,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive, sometimes making the process harder to understand. “Smoke type” is not an appropriate description of steam, and “electricity pole” is less precise than the diagram’s transmission pylon or power lines. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as “caled,” “hote,” and “tubine.” Aim for accurate technical terms and natural collocations, such as “water is pumped underground” and “the turbine drives the generator,” rather than vague phrases like “goes through the process init.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is sometimes expressed with clauses such as “After passing this, the water become hot and pumped up to condenser.” However, the longer structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some relationships unclear. Examples include missing articles in “There is pipe” and “to condenser,” subject–verb disagreement in “the water become” and “the generator … have,” and inconsistent verb forms in “it reached.” Sentence boundaries and spacing also need attention: the opening joins two sentences without a space after the full stop, and several clauses are run together. Practise accurate present-simple passive forms for process descriptions, such as “water is pumped down” and “steam is produced,” alongside shorter, correctly punctuated sentences.
