IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The five process of geothermal power plant illustrate how electricity make.

Overview, It can be clearly seen that, They begin on cold water and then they electricity generate into 5 process.

Firstly, The cold water pumped down 4.5 kilometers. And second procces is injection well and then the water is flow in the geothermal zone and after that third process is started they production well their wrok is hot water pumped up.Then forth process is condenser then they change into the steam and ready for fifth process they change to turbine they change steam into circul shape and they stright go to generator and this is the last process after that the give him electricty.and then they go geothermal poer plant.

Conslusion. There have five process the electricty have made into different stages firstly they change into five stage after that give hime lights.and they is a very lengthy process

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main subject and several relevant stages, including cold water being pumped underground, heating in the geothermal zone, hot water rising, and steam powering a turbine and generator. However, the account only partially explains the process: the overview is unclear, and the sequence and functions of later stages are difficult to follow. For example, “they change into the steam” does not clearly identify what changes, while “they change steam into circul shape” misrepresents the turbine’s role; the diagram shows steam powering the turbine, which drives the generator. The final claim about producing “lights” is not a feature shown. A clearer overview and accurate descriptions of the key transformations would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response makes an attempt to follow the process in sequence, using “Firstly,” “after that,” and “then,” so the reader can recognise a basic chronological structure. However, progression is not consistently clear, and the linking words are often mechanical or attached to incomplete ideas. The opening overview is separated awkwardly (“Overview, It can be clearly seen…”), while the long middle section combines many stages without clear sentence boundaries. References such as “they” and “this” do not always make clear whether you mean the water, steam, turbine, or generator. Organise the report into a short introduction and overview followed by clearly separated process stages, and use precise references to improve the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “turbine,” which helps identify the equipment and stages. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the process difficult to understand, such as “electricity make,” “they change into the steam,” and “circul shape.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “procces,” “wrok,” “electricty,” and “poer.” Aim to use accurate process verbs and standard technical terms, for example, say that water is heated, pumped up, converted to steam, and used to drive a turbine. Proofreading spelling would also make your meaning clearer.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to describe a sequence using both short statements and longer sentences, but the grammatical range is limited and errors occur frequently. Verb forms and sentence construction are often faulty: “The five process … illustrate how electricity make” lacks correct plural and verb forms, and “the water is flow” uses an incorrect verb pattern. Articles and agreement are also problematic in phrases such as “the steam” and “they electricity generate.” Several sentences run together, particularly the long description beginning “Then forth process is condenser,” making relationships between stages unclear. Practise simple, accurate passive forms suited to process diagrams, such as “Cold water is pumped down” and “The steam drives the turbine,” before attempting longer sentences.
