IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The below diagram illustrate and demonstrate the how to generate electric through the process of geothermal power plant and diagram shows that how to produce electricity they are followed by five steps.

At the starting point, cold water pumded down on the below surface of the water their length have inside the water surface almost 4.5km.we have deployed on the earth surface injection well they absorve the cold water and send into geothermal zone.whoever when geothermal zone process and send into the prouction well.

after all that process hot water pumped up and send them into condenser afterward collect the information they have send data in the foam of steam.Turbine collect data generate and optimize and process all that and send into generater they have produced electricity and they have pass electric city through elecric wire.

in conculsion, all process shows that startegy of processing electricity through all over the world

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the main sequence, including cold water being sent underground, heated in the geothermal zone, brought back up, and used to produce electricity. The 4.5 km depth is also reported, and the response recognises that the process has several stages. However, the account is incomplete and sometimes inaccurate: the condenser’s role in producing steam is unclear, and the turbine and generator are described as collecting and processing “data” rather than converting steam energy into electricity. The final statement about processing electricity “through all over the world” is not supported by the diagram. There is no clear, accurate overview of the process as a whole. The response is also one word below the required minimum. To improve, summarise the full sequence precisely and include a concise overview.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response follows the general order of the process, moving from cold water to the underground zone and then to the equipment at the surface. This gives the reader some sense of sequence, and phrases such as “after all that process” attempt to connect stages. However, the writing is divided into only a few long, loosely connected sections, and progression becomes difficult to follow when several steps are joined in one sentence. For example, the sentence beginning “after all that process” moves from hot water to the condenser, steam, turbine and generator without clear links between each stage. Some references, such as “they” and “all that,” are also unclear. Use separate sentences for the main stages and straightforward sequencing expressions such as “next” and “finally.”

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “turbine” and “electricity.” These terms show awareness of the diagram’s subject. However, vocabulary is basic and often repetitive, while several word choices make the process difficult to understand. “Collect data,” “optimize” and “send data in the foam of steam” do not accurately describe the equipment’s functions; “data” appears to be used where energy or steam is intended. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “pumded,” “absorve,” “generater” and “elecric.” Aim to use precise process verbs and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as being heated, steam as driving the turbine, and the generator as producing electricity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to combine ideas using clauses and sequencing language, but sentence structures are often faulty, and grammatical errors frequently make relationships between stages unclear. The opening, “The below diagram illustrate and demonstrate the how to generate electric,” has problems with subject–verb agreement, article use and clause construction. In “cold water pumded down,” the passive verb form is incomplete, while “they are followed by five steps” does not clearly express the intended meaning. Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and sentences that run together. Use a reliable pattern for each stage, such as “Cold water is pumped down the injection well,” and check verb forms, agreement and sentence boundaries.
