IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram illustrate the different steps of processing geothermal energy by geothermal power plant to produce electricity.
Overall, to produce electricity, there is five different stages of process which is started by using cold water, then followed by hot water to steaming process.
The first stage shows gothermal energy is used in producing electricity by using cold water pumping down to the injection well. The well is 4.5 km in depth and inside the injection well, the water is heated by giving high temperature in a geothermal zone. Hot rocks were used inside the thermal zone to make the hot water. The water is then process and transfer to the production well, and pumping up through the condenser area. Inside the condenser zone, hot water is process into the steaming stages. The steam is used and powered by using a large generator turbine to produce electricity and gives electrical energy to the people for household uses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the process as a sequence for generating electricity and include several key stages: cold water is pumped down a 4.5 km injection well, heated by the geothermal zone, and returned through the production well before steam drives machinery. The overview also gives the reader a broad sense of the transformation from cold water to steam. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: the condenser is described as the place where water is pumped up, although it is the production well that carries hot water to the surface, and the diagram shows steam powering a turbine, which drives a separate generator. The claim that electricity is supplied to people for household use is not shown. Clarifying the stages and distinguishing the turbine from the generator would make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall sequence, moving from an introduction and overview to the stages underground and then the equipment at the surface. Sequencing phrases such as “The first stage” and “The water is then” help the reader follow the process, and the ideas are generally arranged logically. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some progression towards more flexible cohesion. However, the overview and first-stage description overlap, while the final sentence combines steam, turbine, generator and electricity in a way that blurs their relationships. Paragraphing is also limited, with the process details largely presented as one block. Separate the overview from the detailed stages and use clearer links between each component.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser” and “steam,” so the reader can recognise the main subject and equipment. There is also some attempt to vary wording, for example “pumping down” and “pumping up.” However, noticeable word-choice, spelling and collocation problems reduce precision: “steaming process” is less suitable than “steam production,” “large generator turbine” confuses two separate components, and “gothermal” is misspelled. Repeated use of “process” and “used” also limits range. Aim for accurate technical collocations and use the diagram’s labels consistently; this will make your vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sequence of clauses in “The water is then process and transfer to the production well, and pumping up through the condenser area.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “The diagram illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, and “there is five different stages” should use a plural construction. Passive forms are also inconsistent in “is then process and transfer,” while “which is started” does not agree naturally with the plural “stages.” These examples show that control of verb forms, agreement and sentence construction needs strengthening. Build accuracy first in shorter sentences, then combine stages using correctly formed passive verbs such as “is pumped,” “is heated” and “is converted.”
