IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given image semonstrates the whole process of generating electricity from geotheromal energy.

Overall, this whole process is in the form of figure and withe five different stapes. While the image shows the conversen of different energy in to different process.

In the whole process, the cold water is keep in to a tank and pass through the ground of around 4.5Km deep then in the second stape injection well is goes straight with geothermal zone(hote rocks). After then in the third process there is another vulb in the other end and from that hole the hot water pumped upward and condenser.

While, the condenser is attach to the generator turbine and rotate the moter and convert the steam energy in to the form of electrical energy at last.Just like this the whole process is complet and the electricity is store in to the tower.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the subject and give a basic account of the main sequence, including water being pumped down, heated by hot rocks, and returned to the surface before electricity is generated. However, the overview is unclear: “the conversen of different energy in to different process” does not clearly summarise the process’s key stages. Some details are inaccurate or confused. The diagram shows a production well, not “another vulb,” and the condenser produces steam before it passes to the turbine; the turbine drives the generator. Electricity is not stored in the tower—the pylon transmits it. The response also falls seven words short of the required minimum. To improve, describe each stage accurately and add a clear overview of the transformation from cold water to electricity.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall arrangement: an introduction, an attempted overview, and two paragraphs describing the process. This gives the reader some sense of progression, and phrases such as “After then” and “at last” signal sequence. However, the progression is not consistently clear because several stages are compressed into long sentences, and links between components are sometimes confusing. For example, “the condenser is attach to the generator turbine” does not make the relationship between the condenser, turbine, and generator clear. The overview also repeats the general idea of a process without adding a useful summary. Use one paragraph for the overview and organise the details in clear chronological stages, with accurate references such as “the steam then powers the turbine.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” “steam,” and “electrical energy,” which helps communicate the topic. However, the range is limited and several word choices or spellings make the description difficult to follow: “semonstrates,” “geotheromal,” “stapes,” and “vulb” are not accurate forms. Some expressions are also unnatural, such as “the ground of around 4.5Km deep” and “electricity is store in to the tower.” Choose precise terms from the diagram, especially “production well,” “turbine,” and “transmission pylon,” and use standard process collocations. Proofreading spelling and selecting accurate technical nouns would make the account clearer and more appropriate for an academic report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to combine stages using longer sentences and sequencing clauses, but the range is limited and these attempts often contain errors that make relationships between actions unclear. For example, “the cold water is keep in to a tank and pass through the ground” has problems with verb forms and parallel structure, while “in the second stape injection well is goes straight” has an incorrect verb construction. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “the condenser is attach to the generator turbine and rotate the moter.” Aim first for accurate simple sentences with a clear subject and verb, then add subordinate clauses where you can control them. Check tense and passive forms consistently, for example, “Cold water is pumped down the injection well.”
