IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The diagram illustrate that how geothermal energy is utilized to produce a electricity. this process divide into 5 diffrent stages.

In order to produce geothermal electricity, geothermal power plant used. This process diveded into 5 diffrent steps.Firstly the cold water pumped down almost 4.5km into injection well.Secondly it goes to the production well by geothermal zone which is usually called hot rocks.this process covert the cold ice water into the hot water which further help to procude steam.

However, then hot water pumped up fro the production well to the condenser, where it convert into steam which is passed by the turbine of a genrator through ehich turbine electricity is produced and transfer to ther particullar stations

Overall, this whole process begains from cold water to form electricity which is curcial for us and easy and low expenditure process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the process as geothermal electricity production and describe its main route: cold water is pumped down, heated underground, brought back up, and used to generate electricity. The reference to the 4.5 km injection well is a useful specific detail. However, the account is incomplete and sometimes unclear: it does not clearly explain that water passes through the hot-rock zone before rising in the production well, and the turbine and generator roles are confused in “the turbine of a genrator” and “through ehich turbine electricity is produced.” The overview is also vague and adds an unsupported claim that the process is “easy and low expenditure.” The response is 11 words below the required minimum. Include a clearer overview and accurately describe each stage and component.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable sequence, using “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “then” to guide the reader through the process. Paragraph breaks also separate the introduction, process details, and concluding overview. However, progression is not consistently clear: the second paragraph compresses several stages into one sentence, while “However” does not express a contrast and makes the transition to the next stage confusing. The final overview repeats the general idea rather than summarising the key stages. Some references, such as “it” in “where it convert into steam,” are not fully clear. Use one paragraph for the overview and organise the remaining stages in order, with accurate links such as “After passing through the hot rocks” and “The resulting steam then drives the turbine.”

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant process vocabulary, including “injection well,” “production well,” “geothermal zone,” “condenser,” and “steam,” which helps identify the equipment and stages. However, the range is limited, and several spelling and word-choice errors make parts difficult to understand: “diffrent,” “genrator,” “curcial,” and “particullar.” Some expressions are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “cold ice water,” “passed by the turbine,” and “low expenditure process.” Choose precise verbs for each stage and check spelling carefully. For example, describe water as being “heated” by the hot rocks, steam as “driving” the turbine, and electricity as being “transmitted” through power lines.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, and the sequence is generally understandable. However, errors occur frequently in basic sentence structures and in attempts to combine stages. For example, “The diagram illustrate that how” has incorrect agreement and clause structure, while “this process divide” and “it convert into steam” omit the required passive or agreement forms. Articles are also inaccurate in “a electricity,” and sentence boundaries and capitalisation are inconsistent, as in “steps.Firstly” and the lowercase “this” after a full stop. Practise accurate passive forms for process descriptions: “Cold water is pumped down,” “it is heated,” and “steam is produced.” Use shorter, complete sentences before attempting longer linked structures.
