IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The given diagram illustrates the production of electricity using geothermal energy.
Overall, five steps are included in this process. It starts with cold water tank and end with electricity.
It begins with the cold water stored in a tank with a tube of length 4.5 kilometers, which is connected to the underground. So initially, this stored cold water is pumped down through the tube reaching the injection well. From there the water goes through a geothermal zone of hot rocks placed parallel to the ground. Once the water passes through this, it reaches the production well as hot water.
Subsequently, the hot water which reaches the production well is pumped up through another tube of about same length into the surface of the ground as steam and then reaching the condenser. The steam formed in the condenser powers the turbine which in turn powers the generator and thus the electricity is produced.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response covers all key stages of the geothermal energy production process, from the cold water tank to the generation of electricity. You have successfully identified the main features and described the sequence of events clearly. The overview is concise, though it could be improved by mentioning the cyclical nature of the process or the depth of the wells more explicitly to provide a more comprehensive summary. Overall, the information is accurate and follows the diagram logically, meeting the requirements of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial stage to the final output. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of the process. You have used cohesive devices such as 'It begins with', 'From there', 'Subsequently', and 'in turn' to link ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases further and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this stored cold water') is always precise to avoid any ambiguity.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including technical terms like 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', 'production well', 'condenser', and 'turbine'. The word choice is generally appropriate for a process description. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is precise enough to convey the technical nature of the diagram. To improve, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'tube' or 'water' too frequently throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that the process is easy to follow. There are minor grammatical slips, such as 'It starts with cold water tank' (missing an article) and 'into the surface of the ground' (preposition choice). However, these errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as passive voice constructions, which are particularly suitable for describing scientific processes.
