IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of generating electricity through geothermal energy. Overall the system consist of five main stages beginning with the pumped down of cold water and ending with the production of electricity through generator.
Initially the cold water from the surface of the ground pumped down approximately 4.5 kilometer to the injection well then the water passes to geothermal zone. The water flows among the hot rocks .As a result the water is heated .
Next, the heated water pumped up through the production well to the ground level then it enter to condenser ,where it converted to steam .The steam directed towards turbine that causes its blades to rotate due to the pressure of steam.
In the final stage the turbine powered to the generator that produces electricity .The electricity produced is transmitted through power lines for distribution to consumers.
Overall, the process uses underground heat to turn cold water into steam, and the steam powers a turbine and generator to produce electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully identifies the main features of the geothermal energy process. You have clearly outlined the stages from the injection of cold water to the final distribution of electricity. The overview provided in the introduction and conclusion helps to frame the process well. To reach a higher band, ensure that you include more specific details from the diagram, such as the depth of 4.5 kilometers or the specific temperature of the rocks if provided, to demonstrate a more thorough coverage of the information. Overall, the response is accurate and addresses the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized into distinct stages, which helps the reader follow the process. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'Next', and 'In the final stage' to sequence the information. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, some sentences are short and choppy. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between the stages would enhance the overall coherence and cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, such as 'geothermal zone', 'condenser', 'turbine', and 'transmitted'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pumped down of cold water' (should be 'pumping down') and 'turbine powered to the generator' (should be 'powers the generator'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' cold water, 'the' ground level) and verb forms ('the system consist' instead of 'consists', 'water pumped up' instead of 'is pumped up'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the process. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the consistent use of passive voice, which is essential for describing technical processes.
