IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram illustrates the way of producing electricity using geothermal energy. Here I am going to summarize the procedure of generating charge below.
Firstly, cold water has sent to underground through the injection well. The water needs to pump down to reach geothermal section consisting with hot rocks. Then projection well make sure to pump the hot water to condenser. This device is used to make steam of hot water pumped by projection well.
Secondly, the main component of all geothermal power plant is typically its Turbine. we could not make charge without it. It is powered by steam. That's why we need to make steam firstly.
Finally, Turbine runs using the steam created by condenser. As turbine runs, it would provide power to Generator, and it would start making electricity. Now, when the charge has once produced, it will send to the tower which transmits the electricity to public.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy process, but it lacks a clear overview of the overall mechanism. The introduction is slightly informal ('Here I am going to...'), and the description of the process is somewhat fragmented. While the key components like the injection well, turbine, and generator are mentioned, the explanation of how they interact is basic. To improve, you should provide a concise summary of the entire process in the introduction and ensure that the relationship between the components is described more clearly and logically, rather than just listing steps.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay uses basic sequencing words like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Finally' to organize the information. While this provides a basic structure, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. The paragraphing is present, but the logical progression could be improved by better linking the stages of the process. For example, the transition between the condenser and the turbine could be smoother. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'it' in 'it would provide power to Generator', which could be more precisely linked to the turbine.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. You rely on simple terms like 'make' and 'run' repeatedly (e.g., 'make steam', 'make charge', 'turbine runs'). There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'generating charge' instead of 'generating electricity' or 'producing power'. To reach a higher band, you should use more technical and precise terminology related to energy production, such as 'harnessing', 'facilitates', 'converts', or 'transmission'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
There are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally hinder clarity. For instance, 'cold water has sent' should be 'cold water is sent' (passive voice), and 'consisting with' should be 'consisting of'. The sentence 'we could not make charge without it' is overly informal for an Academic Task 1 report. While you attempt some complex structures, they are often marred by errors in verb tense or preposition usage. Focusing on consistent passive voice usage and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
