IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given diagram shows the procedure to manufacture electricity using geothermal energy.

Overall, the process consists several stages from beginning to end. There are main 5 steps including in the process of generating electricity.

At the beginning of the process, cold water is put down by using water pump that is 4.5 km deep in the injection well at the second stage. In the next step, water is reached to geothermal zone or hot rocks. The geothermal zone processed it and it is transfered to the production well that is third stage of the procedure.

Moving further, that hot water is pumped up to condenser where it is steamed in the fourth step. At the fifth step, the turbine is powered by using steam. At the end, that turbine is used to power a generator that produces electricity. Then the produced electricity is sent to power house for further use.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy process, identifying the key components such as the injection well, geothermal zone, production well, condenser, and turbine. However, the description is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear, analytical overview of the process as a whole. While the main features are reported, the explanation of how the steam is generated and the transition between the production well and the condenser could be more precise. The response meets the minimum length requirement, but the development of the process steps is quite basic, which limits the score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of events. The use of cohesive devices such as 'At the beginning', 'In the next step', 'Moving further', and 'At the end' provides a clear structure. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes repetitive, and the paragraphing could be more sophisticated. The overall progression is logical, but the mechanical nature of the linking words prevents a higher score. The referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the technical process clearly. Terms like 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', 'condenser', and 'turbine' are used correctly. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple verbs like 'put', 'reached', and 'powered'. There is little evidence of less common or more precise academic vocabulary. While the meaning is always clear, the lack of variety in word choice keeps the score in the mid-range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'consists several stages' (missing 'of'), 'There are main 5 steps including in' (awkward phrasing), and 'water is reached' (incorrect passive voice). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. The use of passive voice is appropriate for a process description, but the control over these structures is inconsistent.
