IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This diagram illustrates the production of electricity by geothermal energy. However, we discuss the complete procedure in the following paragraphs.
To commence with, the production of electricity begins with the lengthy process starts with the cold water first enters in the injection well after complete the 4.5 km down from the natural surface level. Likely, then passes from the geothermal zone where so many hot rocks flows this water flow. Later, it enters in the condenser. After that it converts in the form of steam at that time the main process begins when it achieve at generator through turbine now the water converts into electricity and passes to electricity towers by 11kv wire.
Moreover, its a complete electricity manufacturing process from the shape of water to electricity. Likely, first water gets down at the injection well then passes under the hot rocks where it alleviates temperature later the production well pumped this water condenser and it transfers the water in the form of steam to turbine. Furthermore, the generator powered by turbines converts this to electricity and transfers to electric towers by 11kv wire

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy process, from the injection well to the electricity towers. However, the description is somewhat repetitive, as the second paragraph essentially restates the first without adding new analytical depth or clear comparisons. While the key features are identified, the lack of a clear overview or summary of the process flow limits the score. The explanation of the technical stages is occasionally confusing, such as the mention of 'alleviates temperature' when the process actually involves heating the water. To improve, focus on providing a concise, logical summary of the entire cycle rather than repeating the steps twice.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is hindered by repetition. The transition between the first and second paragraphs is weak, as the second paragraph restarts the explanation of the process. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To commence with', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore', but they are sometimes used mechanically or inappropriately, such as 'Likely' used as a transition word, which is incorrect in this context. Referencing is also inconsistent, making it difficult for the reader to follow the sequence of events clearly. Improving the flow requires better planning to ensure each sentence builds upon the previous one without redundancy.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'manufacturing process' for a natural energy cycle, and 'alleviates temperature' instead of 'heats' or 'increases the temperature'. The phrase 'shape of water' is also imprecise. While the student attempts to use technical terms like 'injection well', 'condenser', and 'turbine', the overall control of collocation is weak. To reach a higher band, focus on using more accurate verbs and nouns related to scientific processes and avoid repetitive or informal phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a high frequency of grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are frequent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'the production... starts', 'water flows'), incorrect preposition usage (e.g., 'enters in the injection well'), and sentence structure (e.g., 'the main process begins when it achieve at generator'). The use of complex sentences is limited and often results in run-on sentences or fragments. While the meaning is generally understandable, the persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on sentence boundaries and correct verb forms is essential.
