IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given diagram depicts with the help of different five stages how geothermal energy is used to generate the power.

To commence with, at first step the cold water pumped at 4.5 km down to make the water hot so through the injection well which is the second step then water runs to the Geothermal zone where it comes in contract with hot rocks.

Furthermore, in the third level the production well originate the hot water which later pumped up the hot water to the fourth stage which is called condenser. The whole water collected into the condenser where the steam of water arrived at the final step that is generator and turbine.

Moreover, in Generate and tribune electricity manufactured by tribune and deliver the power to the geothermal power plant.

In conclusion, the geothermal power plant has five steps to make the energy and we can see that how water played an essential role to produce the electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy process, identifying the five steps clearly. However, the description of the process is somewhat mechanical and lacks a clear overview or summary of the main features beyond stating there are five steps. The description of the technical process is occasionally inaccurate, such as stating the 'production well originate the hot water' and describing the condenser as a place where 'the whole water collected'. While the task is addressed, the lack of a clear summary of the overall process and the imprecise reporting of the technical details limit the score. To improve, focus on synthesizing the information into a coherent overview and ensuring technical terms are used accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the sequence of the process. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, the use of these devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Additionally, the progression of ideas within the paragraphs is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the condenser and the generator. The referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult to follow the flow of the process. Improving the variety of cohesive devices and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for a higher band. There are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'manufactured by tribune' instead of 'generated by the turbine' and 'comes in contract' instead of 'comes into contact'. The repetition of basic terms like 'water' and 'step' also limits the lexical variety. To improve, focus on learning technical collocations related to energy production and using a wider range of vocabulary to describe processes, such as 'harnessing', 'facilitating', or 'conversion'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'the cold water pumped at 4.5 km down to make the water hot so through the injection well', which is a run-on sentence with awkward syntax. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'in Generate and tribune electricity manufactured by tribune'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents a higher score. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
