IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The illustration displays the procedure of electricity generation from geothermal energy at the power plant setup.

Overall, the electricity production involves a five step process, where cold water is being converted into vapour with the help of hot rocks form of a geothermal energy in order to power a turbine to generate electricity.

The first step starts with cold water getting pumped down at 4.5 km deep to the injection well which leads to the geothermal zone. There are many hot rocks in this zone converting cold water into hot. The water will be pumped up to surface level through the production well into a condenser.

At the fourth step hot water turns to steam inside the condenser, which will be pushed into a turbine. The vapour powers up the turbine to spin the steam forcefully to start the generator, which produces electricity. The electricity will be transferred to a power station from where it will be distributed to the consumers.
