The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of producing electricity from geothermal energy. Overall, there are five main stages, beginning with pumping cold water underground and ending with the generation of electricity.
Initially, cold water is stored in a tank before being pumped approximately 4.5 kilometres below the ground through an injection well. The water then passes through a geothermal zone, where it is heated by hot rocks beneath the Earth's surface.
After being heated, the hot water rises to the surface through a separate production well. It is then transferred into a condenser, where it is converted into steam. The steam is directed towards a turbine, causing it to rotate.
In the final stage, the spinning turbine drives a generator, which produces electricity. The electricity generated is then supplied to the power grid for distribution to consumers.
