IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

THE BELOW GIVEN PROCEDURE DEPICTS THE PRODUCTION OF ELECTRICITY THROUGH RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE NAMELY, GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT. OVERALL, THE PROCESS CONTAINS 5 MAIN STAGES, BEGINNING WITH COLD WATER PUMPED UNDERGROUND THEN IT TURNS INTO HOT STEAM BY CONDENSER AND IN THE LAST ELECTRICITY PRODUCED BY A GENERATOR WITH A HELP OF TURBINE.

IN THE FIRST STAGE, COLD WATER STORED INTO A CONTAINER AND PUMPED DOWN THROUGH THE INJECTION WELL TO DEPTH OF 4.5 KM. AFTER THAT, WATER PASSED HORIZONTALLY THROUGH GEOTHERMAL ZONE, WHERE IT IS HEATED BY THE SURROUNDING HOT ROCKS. IN THE NEXT STAGE, HEATED WATER IS PUMPED UP TO GROUND THROUGH THE PRODUCTION WELL.

ONCE ABOVE GROUND, THE WATER ENTERS INTO CONDENSER AND CONVERTED INTO STEAM. IN FURTHERMORE STEP, STEAM PASSED TO TURBINE AND START TO ROTATING IT BY THEIR PRESSURE. IN THE LAST STAGE, TURBINE POWERED GENERATOR WHICH STARTING PRODUCING ELECTRICITY AND AFTER IT SUPPLIES TO HIGH VOLTAGE TOWER FOR USAGE. THUS, GEOTHERMAL HEAT IS TRANSFORMED INTO ELECTRICAL ENERGY THROUGH A COMBINATION OF UNDERGROUND HEATING AND MECHANISM.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response successfully identifies the main stages of the geothermal energy production process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of events logically. However, there are some inaccuracies in the description of the process; for instance, the diagram shows the condenser converting steam into water, whereas you stated it converts water into steam. Additionally, the description of the turbine's role is slightly simplified. To reach a higher band, ensure that the technical details are accurately reflected from the visual information provided. The summary is well-structured and covers all key components of the diagram.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'In the first stage', 'After that', and 'In the last stage' to guide the reader through the process. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or grammatically awkward, such as 'In furthermore step'. Improving the variety and natural flow of these linking phrases would enhance the cohesion of the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different phases of the process.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the process, including terms like 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', and 'high voltage tower'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'with a help of turbine' instead of 'with the help of a turbine' and 'start to rotating it' instead of 'starts to rotate it'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over technical terminology and article usage to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles (e.g., 'electricity produced by a generator', 'water passed horizontally', 'turbine powered generator which starting producing'). These errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage when describing a process, as well as the correct placement of articles before nouns.
