IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given process chart illustrates the how geothermal energy used to produce electricity at a geothermal power plant.

Overall, it is clear that the cycle involves five main stages, begging with cold water pumped down and ending with generate electricity.

In initial stage, the cold water pumped down to the depth of 4.5 km through injection well to reach the geothermal zone containing hot rocks,. The absorbing heat from hot rocks , it pumped up hot water through production well.

In the next step, hot water passes though the condenser to form steam. Then the stream drictely sent to turbine , it powered by turbine and finally generate electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the main stages of the geothermal process are identified, the description is underdeveloped and lacks the necessary detail to fully explain the cycle. The summary of the process is too brief, and the comparison of features is minimal. To improve, you must expand on the technical details provided in the diagram, such as the specific role of the condenser and the turbine, and ensure the response reaches the required length to allow for a full development of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organized into short paragraphs, which helps with the overall structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the injection well and the production well is abrupt. The flow of ideas is somewhat disjointed due to the brevity of the sentences. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect the stages of the process more fluidly, ensuring that the progression from one step to the next is logical and easy for the reader to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, often relying on the words provided in the prompt. There are several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'begging' instead of 'beginning' and 'drictely' instead of 'directly'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe a technical process with precision. To improve, focus on learning topic-specific terminology related to energy production, such as 'geothermal reservoir', 'thermal energy', and 'electricity generation', and ensure you proofread your work to eliminate simple spelling errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with article usage (e.g., 'In initial stage'), missing verbs (e.g., 'how geothermal energy used'), and awkward sentence construction (e.g., 'it powered by turbine'). The range of grammatical structures is very limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically the use of passive voice, which is essential for describing processes, and ensure that every sentence has a clear subject and a correctly conjugated verb.
