IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagram is a pictorial representation of the geothermal power plant. It illustrate process of electricity production using geothermal energy.
The electricity production from geothermal power plant consist of total 5 steps. In initial step the cold water stored in the tank is pumped 4.5 km downwards. This pumped water enters the injection well. The injection well is a geothermal zone, consisting of hot rocks which helps in boiling process of this cold water during its passage. In the subsequent step, the hot water passes towards the production well where, this hot water is pumped upwards. The hot water later enters in the condenser. The steam arising form the hot water is passed through a pipe connecting condenser and turbine together. The turbine is powered by steams, allowing it to rotate. In the final stage the generator produces electricity as rotation of turbine produces energy for generator. Finally this produced electricity is supplied to the power plant.
Overall, the picture represent the procedure followed for electricity production. It involves total 5 steps starting from cold water pumped downwards undergoes heating process and ending with the steam from the hot water allows turbine and generator to produce electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully identifies the main features of the geothermal energy process. You have clearly outlined the five steps involved, from the initial injection of water to the final generation of electricity. However, the description of the process is slightly mechanical and lacks a more sophisticated synthesis of the information. While you mention the 'hot rocks' and the 'condenser', the relationship between these components could be explained with more precision to better highlight the technical nature of the diagram. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well, providing a clear and logical summary of the provided visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized, with a clear introduction, a body paragraph detailing the process, and a summary overview. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In initial step', 'In the subsequent step', and 'Finally', which help guide the reader through the sequence. However, the flow between sentences can feel a bit repetitive due to the reliance on similar sentence structures. To improve, try to vary your transition signals and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'this hot water') is used more naturally to avoid redundancy. Paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using subject-specific terms like 'geothermal power plant', 'injection well', 'condenser', and 'turbine'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pictorial representation' (which is slightly wordy) and 'arising form' (a typo for 'from'). Additionally, some phrasing is a bit simplistic, such as 'consisting of total 5 steps'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise verbs and avoiding repetitive phrasing. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning clearly, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement errors ('It illustrate', 'picture represent') and missing articles ('in initial step', 'to the power plant'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'the steam arising form the hot water is passed through a pipe connecting condenser and turbine together.' You should focus on proofreading for basic errors like pluralization and article usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help improve your score in this criterion.
