IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The figure demonstrates the whole process of producing energy using geothermal power.

Overall, the presented figure shows well-defined steps to generate electricity using hot rocks, starting with pumping cold water into the ground, where it passes through the geothermal zone, and then pumping the heated water back up to the condenser before finally generating electricity.

To explain the process in detail, first, cold water is pumped into the ground to a depth of 4.5 km. It is then injected through three tubes and passes through the geothermal zone which is hot rocks, where it gets heated. Afterwards, the hot water is pumped up to the condenser in the same length, where it is converted into steam. The steam then passes through a turbine, causing it to generate mechanical energy, before reaching the generator, where electricity is produced. Finally, the electricity is transmitted through wires to the power tower for distribution.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully identifies the main features of the geothermal energy production process. You have provided a clear overview and followed the sequence of events logically from the injection of water to the distribution of electricity. The inclusion of specific details, such as the depth of 4.5 km, demonstrates a good grasp of the provided data. To reach a higher band, ensure that you explicitly mention the cyclical nature of the process if the diagram implies it, and perhaps provide a slightly more analytical comparison between the stages rather than just a linear description.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response is well-organized with a clear introduction, a summary paragraph, and a detailed process description. The use of cohesive devices such as 'first', 'then', 'afterwards', and 'finally' creates a logical flow that is easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the detailed steps. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is effective and supports the reader's understanding of the technical process described in the diagram.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have used a range of vocabulary appropriate for a technical process description, such as 'geothermal zone', 'condenser', 'mechanical energy', and 'distribution'. The word choice is generally precise and fits the context well. There are no significant spelling errors, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the information clearly. To improve further, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or varied synonyms to describe the movement of fluids and energy, which would demonstrate a wider and more flexible range of lexical items.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writing demonstrates a good control of grammatical structures. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'It is then injected through three tubes and passes through the geothermal zone which is hot rocks, where it gets heated.' The punctuation is accurate, and the sentences are generally error-free. While the grammar is solid, incorporating a few more varied complex structures, such as passive voice constructions or participle clauses, would further enhance the grammatical range and help you achieve a higher score.
