IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This diagram gives us information about How to produced electricity for uses of geothermal energy method.
Overall, geothermal power plant where produce electricity uses the method of geothermal energy, and they are divided five different parts and every part has own work, moreover every part has a sequence because produce electricity not like randomly every process has step by step.
The process start to cold water in the earth almost 4.5 kilometers below the earth and pumped down cold water than start second step called the injection well. This cold water complete the process with geothermal zone they are hot rocks where the cold water pumped down and hit the hot rocks, after this process water almost hot. Than third step start called the production well after that, condenser which is 4 step and steam threw a pipe and put into turbine this step powered by steam and last the generator produced electricity.
To sum up, there are total 5 steps to produced electricity the method use called geothermal energy .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student provides an overview of the geothermal energy process, outlining the sequence of steps involved in electricity generation. However, the explanation lacks clarity and specificity in detailing how each part contributes to the process. For instance, while the student mentions "hot rocks," they do not describe their role adequately, which weakens the overall task achievement. To improve, the response should include more precise descriptions of each stage and their relationship to the geothermal process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The coherence and cohesion of the response are somewhat lacking; the ideas float rather than progress smoothly. The use of transition words is minimal, which makes it difficult for the reader to follow the sequence of processes. For example, words like 'first,' 'next,' or 'finally' could improve the flow of information. To enhance coherence, the student should focus on constructing clearer connections between ideas and paragraphs to guide the reader through the explanation of the process.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical resource shows some attempt to use appropriate terminology related to geothermal energy, such as "injection well" and "production well." However, there are several inaccuracies, such as "how to produced electricity" instead of "how electricity is produced." There are limited examples of varied vocabulary, which affects overall lexical range. Incorporating more specific energy-related terminology would strengthen this section significantly, as would improving the overall word choice.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The grammatical range and accuracy are limited with several errors. For instance, phrases like "where produce electricity uses" and "cold water complete the process with geothermal zone" illustrate these issues. The use of articles is inconsistent, and there are run-on sentences that affect readability. Aim to use clearer sentence structures and ensure subject-verb agreement to enhance grammatical accuracy. Additionally, reviewing case forms will also benefit the overall readability.
Overall feedback
Your response demonstrates a basic understanding of the geothermal energy process and outlines the necessary steps involved in generating electricity. To strengthen your writing, focus on clearly describing each step and how it relates to the overall process, ensuring the sequence is easy to follow. Improve your coherence by using more linking words and phrases to create stronger transitions between ideas. Additionally, pay attention to sentence structure and grammar to avoid errors that hinder clarity. Expanding your vocabulary would help articulate your points more effectively.
