IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram below illustrates how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Overall, the diagram represents how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity step-by-step.
Firstly, the cold water is pumped down into the injection well, which is 4.5 km below ground level. Then the water goes through the geothermal zone, where the temperature is high due to the hot rocks inside the Earth's crust; the water is boiled and goes through the production well. From the production well, the water is pumped up to the ground level, while the steam from the boiled water is stored in the condenser. Moreover, the steam goes through a tunnel and rotates the turbine. Where the turbines kinetic energy produces electricity. Then the electricity was transferred to the transformer, where it can be distributed to different locations.
In conclusion, geothermal energy uses the hot earth temperature below the ground level to produce electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response adequately addresses the task by summarizing the main features of the diagram, explaining the process of how geothermal energy generates electricity. Key steps are included, such as the injection of cold water and its transformation into steam. However, the explanation lacks explicit comparisons between various stages, which would enhance the response. Overall, the task achievement is good but could be improved by providing more detailed comparisons and summaries of data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The organization of the response is generally clear, following a logical sequence that reflects the geothermal energy process. However, some transitions could be smoother, particularly where the flow between steps could be better connected. For instance, the use of "Moreover" feels slightly abrupt. The conclusion effectively wraps up the response but could reinforce main features more strongly. Clarity and cohesion are evident, but slight improvements in transitional phrases could enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some appropriate terms related to geothermal energy such as "injection well," "turbine," and "transformer." However, there are phrases that could be replaced with more suitable academic vocabulary, like "cold water" could be refined to "chilled water" or "temperate water." Word choice is generally correct but lacks variety, which can affect the lexical resource score. A broader range of terminology would strengthen the overall impression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The grammatical range is adequate, with a mix of simple and complex sentences. However, there are several grammatical errors, such as "the turbines kinetic energy produces electricity" which should read "the turbine's kinetic energy produces electricity." Additionally, verb tenses are occasionally inconsistent; for example, "was transferred" should be adjusted to maintain a consistent tense. While errors do not significantly hinder understanding, greater accuracy would improve the score.
Overall feedback
Overall, you demonstrate a good understanding of the procedure for generating electricity from geothermal energy, capturing most essential steps clearly. Your response shows a logical arrangement of ideas, although transitional phrases could enhance the flow. Focus on expanding your vocabulary with more varied and precise terms to elevate your language quality. Moreover, be mindful of grammar and tense consistency; this small refinement can prevent miscommunication. Greater attention to comparing different stages of the process would further strengthen your response.
