IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

Geothermal power plant- cold water is pumped down to 4.5 km through the injection well then geothermal zone is also known as hot rocks then the production well is produced throught it condenser is accessed .therefore condenser is also known as the steam , through it steam produced and then turbine is powered by steam then there is the generator, it is powered by turbine and then the production of electricity held . Generater is generating electricity to the tower which is generating electricity to the houses , farm house etc. therefore electricity is the electrons going to the wire from 120 kv house of electricity. In homes there is the inverter from where the light comes to the house only , and the geothermal power plant is the electricity produced system where electricity is produced , electricity is produced from rocks. Therefore it is known as geothermal power plant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response attempts to describe the geothermal process but fails to provide a clear overview or logical summary of the main features. The information is presented in a fragmented, linear fashion that lacks the necessary structure for an academic report. Key stages, such as the injection of cold water and the conversion of steam to electricity, are mentioned, but the description is often inaccurate or confusing (e.g., 'condenser is also known as the steam'). The response lacks a clear introduction or a summary of the overall process, which is essential for Task 1. Consequently, the information is not well-selected or effectively reported.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The response lacks paragraphing, appearing as a single, dense block of text. Cohesive devices are used in a repetitive and often incorrect manner, such as the frequent, awkward use of 'therefore' to link unrelated ideas. The progression of ideas is difficult to follow because the sentences are poorly connected and lack logical flow. Referencing is often unclear, making it difficult for the reader to understand the relationship between the different components of the geothermal plant. The overall arrangement of information is not coherent.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.0

The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. There is a reliance on basic, imprecise language (e.g., 'electricity produced system', 'electrons going to the wire'). The student struggles to use technical terminology accurately, leading to confusion, such as stating that a condenser is 'known as the steam'. There are also significant issues with word choice and collocation, which impede the clarity of the description. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the process with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response consists primarily of simple, poorly constructed sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There is a lack of control over basic sentence structure, punctuation, and verb tense consistency. Many sentences are run-on or fragmented, such as 'the production well is produced throught it condenser is accessed'. Errors in articles, prepositions, and word order are pervasive throughout the text. There is no evidence of complex sentence structures, and the frequent errors often make the intended meaning difficult to interpret.
