IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The picture illustrates a process how electricity is produced by using a geothermal power plant.
Overall, it is noticed that various steps are included in the process of producing electricity starts with cold water pumping down and ends at generator's work with the help of turbine.
First of all, the cold water is pumped down 4.5 kilometers till the injection well that push the water towards geothermal zone with hot rocks. Then, hot rocks are used to make the cold water hot at geothermal zone. The hot water go towards the production well. After that, the hot water is pumped up 4.5 kilometers by the production well towards the condenser.
Next, the condenser takes the steam of hot water and sends it to the turbine which works with the power of steam. Finally the turbine gives power to the generator and it produces electricity which is transferred at different places with the help of power lines.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main stages of the geothermal energy production process. You covered the journey from the injection of cold water to the final generation of electricity. However, the response lacks a clear overview of the key features of the diagram, such as the depth of the wells or the cyclical nature of the process. To reach a higher band, ensure you highlight the most significant trends or features in the introduction or overview. While the process is described, the description is somewhat mechanical and could benefit from more precise terminology regarding the physical state changes, such as the transition from water to steam.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear progression from the initial injection to the final output. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'Then', 'After that', and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the steps. While these are effective, the paragraphing is a bit fragmented; the second paragraph is quite short and could be integrated into the introduction or expanded. To improve, try to vary your linking words and use more sophisticated referencing to avoid repetitive sentence structures, which would create a smoother flow between the stages of the process.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the process clearly. You used relevant terms like 'geothermal zone', 'injection well', 'condenser', and 'turbine'. However, there is some repetition of basic verbs like 'pumped' and 'used'. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary. For instance, instead of saying 'make the cold water hot', you could use 'heat the water' or 'raise the temperature of the water'. Expanding your range of descriptive verbs would make the report more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'a process how electricity is produced' should be 'a process of how electricity is produced' or 'a process showing how...'. Additionally, 'the hot water go towards' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('goes'). There are also minor issues with article usage and preposition choice. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that your complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy to minimize these persistent errors.
