IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram shows a detailed structred process of how energy is produced through the use of water by means of gerothermal activites.
The process is consists of 5 main stages which begins with the the 1stage whhich which is a cold water storage through which water is pumped down through the tunnle digged down arounf 4.5km which then leads to 2nd stage where the cold water reaches into the injection well which pushes the cold water through the hot burnung rocks straight to thre production well the stage 3 where hot water is gathered . after this the hot stored water is then pumped all the way up to the stage 4 condenser where the hot water is turned into stream which is then further led to the turbine the last and final stage which is run by thr finally produced hot steam .This is a stage where the enrgy is produced.later on the produced energy is then transfered to the main grid for the electricity distribution

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main stages of the geothermal energy production process, identifying the key components such as the injection well, production well, and turbine. However, the description is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear overview or summary of the process as a whole. While the stages are identified, the explanation of how they interact is slightly muddled, particularly in the transition between the injection and production wells. To improve, you should aim to provide a clear introductory overview that highlights the cyclical nature of the process and ensure that the progression from one stage to the next is described with greater clarity and precision.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is presented as a single, dense paragraph, which makes it difficult to follow the logical progression of the process. There is a lack of effective paragraphing to separate the stages of the diagram. While some cohesive devices are used, such as 'after this' and 'later on', they are often used in a mechanical way. The frequent repetition of words like 'stage' and 'water' creates a disjointed flow. To improve, you should use paragraph breaks to group related information and employ a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'stage', 'water', and 'produced'. There are several spelling errors, such as 'structred', 'gerothermal', 'tunnle', 'arounf', 'burnung', and 'enrgy', which occasionally distract the reader. Furthermore, some word choices are imprecise, such as 'hot burnung rocks' instead of 'hot subterranean rocks' or 'geothermal reservoir'. To reach a higher band, you should focus on using more precise technical vocabulary related to energy production and ensure accurate spelling of key terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement ('The process is consists of'), incorrect verb forms ('tunnle digged'), and run-on sentences that lack proper punctuation. The sentence structure is largely repetitive, relying on simple connectors rather than a mix of complex structures. There are also errors in article usage and word order. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring that subjects and verbs agree, and using punctuation to separate distinct ideas rather than stringing them together with 'which' or 'and'.
