IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given diagram illustrates that how can an electricity is produced through geothermal power plant.

Firstly, cold water is putting in a tank at left side of plant. After that water pumped down 4.5km through the injection well than water passed in geothermal zone in hot rocks . Next, the production well of warm water. This process has occurred underground and therefore, hot water pumped up and collect in a condenser.

Furthermore, fourth step is from condenser hot water steam is send in next zone turbine. Through turbine steam convert into powered the turbine and produces electricity. The generated electricity then send towers. This is the whole five steps to produce electricity.

overall, Geothermal power point has 5 steps to generate electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the score. While the main features of the geothermal process are identified, the description is overly simplistic and lacks the necessary detail to fully explain the cycle. The overview is repetitive and does not provide a clear summary of the process as a whole. Because the response is under-length and lacks sufficient development of the key stages shown in the diagram, it does not fully address the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, which is a positive feature. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. While some linking words like 'Firstly', 'After that', and 'Furthermore' are used, they are often followed by awkward phrasing that disrupts the flow. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Next, the production well of warm water', which lacks a verb and clear connection to the previous step. Overall, the logical flow is present but hindered by the limited development of the content.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'water', 'plant', and 'step'. There are several instances of inaccurate word choice, such as 'is putting in' instead of 'is put into' and 'is send' instead of 'is sent'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe a technical process with precision. To improve, you should incorporate more specific terminology related to energy production and ensure correct word forms are used throughout the report.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are consistent issues with passive voice construction, such as 'an electricity is produced' (should be 'electricity is produced') and 'water pumped down' (missing auxiliary verb). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency are also problematic. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'illustrates that how can an electricity is produced'. A greater focus on basic sentence construction and verb forms is necessary.
