IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how geothermal energy is used to produce electricity.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
This image illustrates the information about production of electricity by the use of geothermal energy though Geothermal power plant with various factors and different steps.
Overall, The power plant is showing the proper diagram which is start from cold water and then pumped into geothermal zone in hot rocks and then it turns into steam which is collected into turbine and with the help of radiations of tower the process of electricity production is successfully and it continuously going on with same steps.
The figures showing the data about cold water which is around 4.5km deep inside the pothole has the beginning process to start the process for electricity, then water enter under the geothermal zone which is also known as hot rocks through injection wall and it turns into hot water.
When the hot water pumped up, it produces the steam because the extreme steam is needed for electricity production so, It has to be extremely hot, So, the steam can enter into the condenser from water. Later on, the steam always enter into turbine which is designed to collect the steam and generator collect the radiations from tower. Therefore, with the help of generator and steam it produced the electricity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response identifies the main stages of the geothermal energy process, such as the injection of cold water, the heating phase, and the generation of electricity. However, the description is often inaccurate or confusing. For example, the mention of 'radiations of tower' is a misinterpretation of the diagram, and the explanation of the condenser and turbine is technically unclear. While the response covers the process, the lack of precision in describing the mechanical components and the flow of the system prevents it from reaching a higher band. The overview is present but lacks a clear summary of the key features of the process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as the repetitive use of 'then' and 'so'. Some sentences are disjointed, and the logical flow between the steps is hindered by awkward phrasing. For instance, the transition between the injection of water and the steam production is not clearly linked. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the internal cohesion within paragraphs is weak, and referencing is sometimes unclear, making the progression of ideas feel somewhat forced.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There is a reliance on basic terms, and some word choices are incorrect or inappropriate for an academic report, such as 'pothole' to describe a borehole or well, and 'injection wall' instead of 'injection well'. The phrase 'radiations of tower' is a significant lexical error that misrepresents the diagram. While the meaning is generally understandable, the lack of technical accuracy and the repetitive nature of the vocabulary limit the score. More precise terminology related to energy production would be required for a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout. Issues include incorrect verb tenses ('is start from'), subject-verb agreement errors ('The figures showing'), and awkward punctuation, such as the excessive use of commas and capital letters in the middle of sentences. These errors are noticeable and occasionally cause the reader to pause, although they do not completely impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction and ensuring that verbs and nouns agree correctly.
